Originally this page only chronicled the 1970s through black-and-white photography, but it's since expanded to include current photographs by Jeremy Butler.

More at jercomphoto.com . I built a darkroom in my parents' laundry room in 1970s (when I was 16) and began capturing black-and-white photographs for the rest of the decade. Initially, the images on this site were culled from the thousands I shot during that decade. However, in the 2010s I rediscovered my love for photography and began shooting photos and processing them in Adobe Lightroom--much less smelly than my old laundry-room darkroom.

Latest post to the JerCom Photo (email) Newsletter: "Flags on a Gusty Night."

Winds were gusting up to 40 mph (64 kph) on the night I captured these flags. I took a heavy-duty tripod with me, but I was still concerned that the wind might affect the camera.

The impact of motion blur on a quickly moving subject fascinate me—especially, in this case, how the flags’ momentary stasis resulted in their image registering on the camera’s sensor.

You can also detect motion blur in the leaves of the tree on the right.

The Impact of a Red Filter on a Black-and-White Image, Hugh Thomas Bridge, Northport, Ala; September 7, 2026 at 8:23:20 AM. Today's post to the JerCom Photo (email) Newsletter.

When I shot black-and-white film, I was fascinated by the impact of a red or yellow filter on a blue sky. As in the photo above, a red filter renders a bright blue sky quite dark. This results in dramatic contrasts with puffy white clouds, or, in this case, with the twisted wire bindings on top of a chain-link fence.

Young Man with Bermuda Grass Seed Head. Black-and-White Wednesday on the JerCom Photo (email) Newsletter : Bill sucks on a piece of grass.

In retrospect, it feels a bit odd, but my friends and I would occasionally stick a Bermuda grass seed head in our mouths.

None of us smoked ci******es. Did we use the seed head as a surrogate? Did we think it made us look cool?

There is no telling now.

This seed-head sucker is now an accomplished architect. I don’t know if his seed-head habit has persisted over the past 54 years.

The Unitarian Universalist Church--today's post on the JerCom Photo (email) Newsletter. From the series, "The Churches of Tuscaloosa County, At Night."

Tuscaloosa’s Unitarian church is a modest house of worship, but I would be remiss not to include it in the “Churches of Tuscaloosa County, at Night,” because it was the site of my wedding in 2003.

I am not a member of the church. We simply rented the hall and my father performed the ceremony.

A friend refers to me as a “fallen Unitarian,” because I attended a Unitarian church in my youth, but am no longer associated with the denomination. Those familiar with Unitarianism will recognize that there is not far to fall. ;)

The Ill-Fated Fingers of Roger Williams, 1974. Black-and-White Wednesday on the JerCom Photo (email) Newsletter: The fingers of the 17th-century theologian’s statue have suffered several misfortunes.

When I visited this larger-than-life-sized statue of 17th-century theologian Roger Williams in the spring of 1974 I was struck by his posture—leaning backwards slightly—and by the thumb missing from his left hand. Little did I know that his fingers would suffer at the hands of vandals 32 years later! According to Wikipedia, all of the statue’s fingers on its left hand (except, presumably, the already missing thumb) and the thumb of its right hand were stolen.

Four years later, in 2020, the damage was repaired. I was on the Brown campus a few months ago. I wish I’d known this story then! I would have made a pilgrimage to Prospect Terrace Park to re-create this photograph!

All Nations Church of Jesus Christ, Inc. at Moonrise, from the series, "The Churches of Tuscaloosa County, At Night" on the JerCom Photo (email) Newsletter.

The All Nations Church of Jesus Christ, Inc. was the subject of one of my earliest Substack posts—April 13, 2025. And the image was captured months before then, on October 7, 2024—nearly two years ago. I noticed that the church had been abandoned and decided to take an updated photograph of it.
