This week’s Wilmington Works Like a Dog features two best friends who also happen to share a love for animal rescue!

Madison got started in rescue after finding a litter of kittens in her yard during the 2020 COVID shutdown. She’s been fostering ever since, along with helping with community cats, foster communication, transport, trapping, and advocacy.

Reese was introduced to fostering through Madison and eventually started fostering herself. Today, she usually has a new foster or two each month, volunteers at adoption events, and helps Dauntless Animal Rescue get its animals in front of potential adopters through social media.

For both of them, the most rewarding part is seeing an animal who may have started out scared or unsure settle into a loving forever home and get the second chance they deserve!

And while rescue can look different from day to day, they both agree that there are plenty of ways to help without adopting. Donate, foster, transport, volunteer, share a rescue post, or simply learn more about what animals in your community need.

It truly takes a village. 🐾

Wilmington Works Like a Dog 🐾

Meet Veronica, Founder and Director of Advise NC at UNCW, and Rosie, her 3-year-old dachshund mix.
Rosie joined Veronica’s family through rescue after being the runt of her litter, and they quickly fell in love with her. These days, she’s become quite the little adventurer, joining the family for farmers markets, paddle boarding, runs, and walks on the beach. She’s also taken on the role of big sister to Veronica’s 1.5-year-old son and has become his little protector.

Veronica’s work is centered around helping people find their own paths. As Director of Advise NC, she leads a team of advisers who work with high school seniors in underserved, low-income communities to help them navigate their options for college and careers.

What makes the work especially meaningful to Veronica is getting to watch both her team and their students grow into their own purpose. She loves seeing advisers flourish in their roles and hearing stories from students who are achieving dreams they once didn’t think were possible.

It’s been a second since I’ve done a reintroduction (hi, I’m Bre), but I thought it’d be more fun to focus on a few of Roux’s ✨quirks✨

Some things you should know about him:

He sleeps belly up.

Teaching him to shake was a mistake because now he just likes to slap us when he wants something.

He doesn’t necessarily sing or scream like some huskies, but he does chuff and talk to us all the time.

Not a deep water fan, but he loves sitting in kiddie pools or right where the waves come in at the beach.

He barks every time I try to get on the phone, because apparently I’m not allowed to talk to anyone besides him.

And he jumps on things like a fox trying to burrow into the ground.

So there you have it, while Isla is still the true boss of the house, Roux is the bossiest. Tell me your pet’s weirdest habit in the comments!

Wilmington Works Like a Dog 🐾

Meet Wilmington NC Realtor | Melanie Guerra , a Realtor with Living By The Coast Realty Group at REMAX Executive, and her 9-year-old chocolate Lab, Pebbles.

Melanie says her favorite part of real estate is making the experience feel personal. She gets to bring creativity into how she markets homes and finds little ways to make her clients feel cared for throughout the process.

Outside of work, Pebbles is a pretty important part of Melanie’s routine. The two start their mornings with a 2-mile walk when the weather cooperates, and Melanie says Pebbles has a way of reminding her to get out of her head and enjoy the present moment.

Melanie is also hosting a FREE Keys & Coffee event this Thursday, August 27th from 5:30–7 PM at CrossCountry Mortgage. If you’ve been curious about buying a home in the Wilmington area, this is a chance to learn about the process, ask questions, and get a clearer idea of what it takes to become a homeowner. There will also be lattes, pastries, charcuterie, and local door prizes.

Private Pooch Plunge sessions are here!!

This year, I’ve teamed up with the YMCA for a handful of PRIVATE sessions ahead of the big public event, just your dog, the pool, and me. No crowd, no stress, just your water-loving pup having the whole pool to themselves.

📅 Tuesday, September 8th or Wednesday, September 9th
🕐 Sessions between 1:00 and 3:00pm
📍 Legion Stadium Pool, Wilmington
💵 $175, includes three professionally edited digital photos

Humans can’t get in the pool, but you’ll be right there cheering your dog on!

Wilmington Works Like a Dog 🐾

Meet Ceyda, along with her dogs Buoy and Theodore

During the week, Ceyda works as an ophthalmic technician, where she gets to learn about different eye diseases and see something new every day. On the weekends, she switches gears and works with service dogs through Paws4People. She started the assistance dog trainer program at UNCW in 2017 and has continued volunteering with the organization ever since. She also works as a kennel tech at the Puppy Development Center.

What she loves most about the service dog work is seeing the difference it makes when someone goes home with a dog that can help support their independence.

At home, Buoy and Theodore are her own “failed” service dogs, but Ceyda says they still provide plenty of comfort and support. They have very different personalities, love going to the beach and on walks, and make sure she gets a very enthusiastic welcome home every day.
