The majestic mesas of southern Utah. The land of my youthdom. The last light lifts up Zion’s West Temple every time a visible sun sets.

NPW6: The peeking light sets the buttes in Canyonlands National Park ablaze. This is the most underrated park in Utah. You have to get off the beaten path to see this.

NPW 2: Celebrating National Park Week with a photo from one of my favorite places on earth. Zion. I grew up in nearby St. George and used to hike The Narrows before the world found out about them. In the pre 2000 era, you could drive up, find a parking spot, hike in and see sparse groups of people. Not so anymore—but that doesn’t detract from its magnificence. With proper timing and patience, you can still find it as it was.

Here’s a lovely boulder deep in the canyon. I remember seeing this when I was younger and it’s still there as of last November.

Happy National Park Week! Over the next several days to celebrate our magnificent parks, I’ll be sharing never seen before images from my favorite parks.

1: After several depressing days of thick wildfire smoke, it blew away overnight and left us with an epic and immense view of Mt. Rainier dressed in a skirt of lavender asters. One cannot fully appreciate the size and PRESENCE of Rainier until it smacks you in the face. That’s how it felt this morning. Enjoy and stay tuned for more photos!

Who says Yellowstone isn’t photogenic? I’ve been several times over my lifetime and this was my first time as a landscape photographer. What a unique place.
