You don’t have to have everything figured out before you reach out.

Couples often hesitate to reach out because they don’t know how much coverage they need, whether they should do a first look, what their timeline should look like, or even what questions they should be asking.

And that’s okay.

Most couples are planning a wedding for the first time. Whether you’ve known exactly what you want since you were little or you’re figuring it out as you go, there’s a lot to think about.

Sometimes all you need is someone to talk through the options with. Someone to bounce ideas off of. Someone who can help you see what’s possible and, most importantly, help you come back to what’s actually important to you.

Sometimes the best ideas come from putting those things together and creating something you wouldn’t have thought of on your own.

You don’t have to come to me with a perfectly planned wedding. We can figure it out together.

I talk a lot about what it’s like to work with me, but not nearly as much about the person you’ll actually be spending all that time with.

So, here’s a few snippets about the person behind the camera that have nothing to do with locations, posing, or wedding timelines.

What’s one little thing about you that only people who know you well know?

I’ve played violin since elementary school.
I’ve been part of a community orchestra for more than a decade now, and I still get excited at the beginning of a new season.

I’ve spent time learning Lino printing, interior design, automotive detailing, watercoloring, bread making, the list goes on. I may not be good at it, but I love a chance to learn something new.

Yes, I know how to drive a manual. There’s something about a good road, good music, and nowhere you need to be.

This was not something I got into, but my husband. Somehow along the way I ended up learning how to play, fix machines, and go on road trips to bring them home. It took a few years, but now my kids are all better than me.

Yes, there is memorabilia in my basement. Recently my husband and I started walking the distance from the Shire to Mordor. We’re even getting medals and it is awesome!

Give me a reason to ask someone about themselves and I’ll probably take it. Stories change stories and we all need people cheering us on.

Most people don’t walk into a session knowing what to do with their hands, how to stand, or how to look natural in front of a camera.

That’s okay.

I’ll tell you where to stand. I’ll tell you what to do with your hands. I’ll fix the little things you don’t notice.

Eventually, you’ll stop thinking about all of that.

And that’s usually when the good stuff starts happening.

You start paying attention to each other instead.

You don’t have to know how to pose. You just have to show up.

I know most people don’t walk into a photo session feeling completely comfortable.

You’re wondering what to do with your hands. If you’re smiling weirdly. Whether you’re standing the right way. Is your makeup melting? Are you doing what I’m asking you to do?

And honestly, I don’t expect you to know.

That’s my job.

What I really love is watching what happens after you’ve seen the back of the camera a few times and realized, “Oh. We actually look really good.”

Your shoulders drop. You stop second-guessing yourself. You start laughing.

You joke with each other. You stop waiting for me to tell you what to do and start paying attention to the person standing next to you.

That’s the part I want.

Of course I want the gorgeous light. The beautiful location. The flattering pose. The photograph that makes you stop scrolling.

But I want you to look like you in it. I want you to leave thinking that maybe having your picture taken wasn’t nearly as awkward as you expected. Maybe you even had fun.

And years from now, when you see the photographs, I hope you don’t just see that you looked good. I hope you remember how it felt to be there.

I want photographs to do more than remind you what someone looked like.

I want them to make you notice things you might have forgotten.

The way people naturally move toward each other. The laugh that hasn’t changed in twenty years. The little habits that somehow survived every other change.

The evidence that even though life looks different now, some things are still exactly the same.

I have a stack of photo albums sitting on a shelf. A new one added each year, going back more than a decade.

My kids pull them out and love asking about people in my wedding photos. I laugh because they’re seeing people they know in a time they never lived in.

As I look at the images and listen to their laughter sharing memories I see it.

Years of evidence. The faces, the smiles. Exactly the way I remember them.

There’s a photo of my kitchen floor covered in cardboard, paper, and colored pencils. My kids working on another project together. Probably a vending machine or yet another refrigerator.

At the time I noticed the mess.

Now I see the a time when they were all home together. A time where they all worked to create together on a daily basis. I can almost hear the conversations they had while they tried to figure out what they were making.

Looking through the albums, I see the million little ordinary moments that have changed.

Some of the people have changed. The seasons have changed. We have changed.

And despite the seasons of difficulty, there was joy. There was love. There was laughter.

Photographs aren’t only evidence of what happened. They can become evidence of what was good.

Planning a wedding comes with a lot of decisions. Venues. Flowers. Invitations. Photography. It doesn’t take long before you’re searching for advice and finding lists of questions you’re supposed to ask every vendor.

Those lists can be helpful, but over the years I’ve found myself wishing couples asked a few different questions first. The answers mattering more than most couples realize. I wrote more about it on the blog today.
