Today is Al’s birthday! He would have been 78 today. He would be cooking, baking bread, taking photos and spending time with loved ones, especially his dogs.

I remember seeing this photo of Al at his funeral and it spoke to me. This is how I will always remember him. Something in his eyes said to me, “I am ok, and I will see you again soon.”

He served, loved everyone, and made friends everywhere he went. So in honor of his birthday today, take a moment to share something with someone else. Food, a message, a hug, a photo, or just a warm welcome.

I don’t know how many of you knew that one of Al’s big passions was to restore photos. He spent years preserving books, photos and many other items.

He spent days on photo projects like this where a client or friend would ask him to help bring these post photos back to life.

Don’t throw those old photos out. Scan them, clean them up or give them to a photo restoration expert and bring them back.

Each photo has a story to tell.

This is one of my favorite photos of my dad from his funeral. I asked my mom about this and she said once he permed his hair no one recognized him.

To me this shows you that he was wild, fun and always willing to do something different. I think he looks like and maybe this was his inspiration. Whatever it was he sure loved to stand out and try new things.

I hope to share all the photos from my dads archives and many photos of him through the years.

I will do my best to share his stories and make this account very heartfelt as he would want it.

Thank you for all of your support, love and prayers. We have felt them and I know my dad is at peace and with his family that has passed on.

Every night each of us would see a post from Al sharing one of his amazing photos accompanied by his wonderful, crazy stories. Lately things have gone quiet. As a family we have been going through so much as my dad has been in the hospital fighting for his life with COVID. Every day we pray for strength and hoping that he will recover.

The odds are not in his favor and he is taking a turn for the worst. Each day it gets harder for him to breathe and he is struggling to use his words, remember where he is at and it’s heart breaking.

I am CR his “favorite middle son”, and I finally got his password so I could come on share the news. Each day gets harder and the tears seem to never end. I can’t be losing him so early. I’m not ready to say goodbye. He has more photos and stories I needed to hear about. I am sure you feel the same also. So with that, please know that he loves each one of you and you are what gave him purpose in life. You are the reason he lived!

Thank you for all the kind words and love you have shown my dad. He truly is an amazing man that has lived an amazing life.

His days are numbered and I would love for you to share your love and if my family gets to sit by his side they can read your words to him as he goes in and out of sleep.

Thank you for all the love ❤️ ❤️❤️-CR

On one my many field trips with my university students, I saw the sun light up this lonely tree. We were on the top of a mountain, and there nothing to obstruct the clear path of the shot. It was 1984, so this photo was taken with Kodak 100 iso ektachrome. After all these years the color has not disappointed me. I

I went to a photo shoot with a friend as an invited guest, and found that it was real treat. The whole place including the models was done up in wild vivid color, you didn’t quite know where to point the camera. It was a color feast for eyes and camera. This post is one my favorites, because the model was just skipping along going somewhere, when I bent down and shot the dress, shoes, and the backdrop. Her little hand was an added bonus, it couldn’t have been better if I had posed her like this. I captured many nice photos, but all were posed except this skipping one. It made my day.

One of early favorite slides. After I bought my first 35mm film camera, which was a Nikon f2, I was shooting every thing in sight. One reason was to see how my new camera worked, the other reason, I was a young photographer and exploring the un photographed world around me. Everyone knows that great feeling, as we start down the endless photographic road. The paint stripper had just laid down this golden stripe in front of my house. I quickly ran out and took this shot. It just an abstract of a yellow line, but I loved it and still do.

Another one of my great trips through the car wash. These crazy images intrigue me to no end. From one second to the next, you never know what you are getting. That’s why I just off photos as fast I can, and the results are beautiful.

My mentor and good friend Borge Andersen was hired by an amusement park to do some post cards of their newly acquired pioneer village. Borge told me that this was a good chance for me to do some commercial work, so I was to take over the project and set up all the shots.
He went along as backup and kind of a guide for me and he shot with his 4x5 camera. I shot 4x5 also and 35mm, plus a 120 Hasselblad, the post you see was not on the schedule but just happened as kind of a fluke.
This young lady showed me this 1800’s bedroom, and it was fantastic, so I asked her to stand over the wicker cradle as if she was tending to a baby. I framed the photo just right and took this shot, out of all the post cards shot that day this is the only one to make history, and become an iconic print.
The pioneer mother photo has been in magazines, on covers of books, and used all over the world. Also one my favorite B&W prints.

This a group of men who belong to a special part of the Rendezvous world. The are called Long Hunters, for several reasons, it the rifles the used, the time period they come from, the type of clothing they wore. These men are re-enactors, and the shot was taken in 1994 at a place called Fort Buenaventura, in Ogden, Utah. I asked them all to meet me at the fort to take a portrait of the group. It had snowed, but the snow just added more ambiance to the shot. Groups take more work to photograph because of so many individuals are doing their own thing and aren’t paying much attention to the photographer. I shot this photo on 120 black and white film with my great companion my Hasselblad. All kinds of groups are important to document, as our world changes.
