One of the things I’ve learned over the years is how powerful it is when students see that learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door. That’s why I’m so excited about Field Notes — a new pilot program I’m launching from January–May 2026.

The vision is simple: connect real classrooms with real field scientists to collaborate on real-world projects. Instead of just reading about science, students will follow along with ongoing research, ask their own questions, and see how discovery happens in real time.

I’m looking for a few Educator Ambassadors to help bring this program into their schools. As part of this first pilot, ambassadors who get their school on board will be invited to join me this summer for one of two Discovery Expeditions — either exploring Lake Superior in May or experiencing the Arctic in July.

If this sparks something for you, let me know. I’ve created a simple one-page overview you can easily share with your administrator, and I’d be happy to send it your way.

Hi, I wanted to thank everyone for your kindness and and support of the work I am doing to connect educators to the amazing place that is the Arctic. I spent 20 years teaching all over Alaska and 6 wonderful years teaching in the the Arctic. While I was there I worked hard to authentically connect my students with the world they lived in. I reached out to Arctic scientists and invited them into my classes, we worked to assist them with field projects, and worked with NOAA to tracked things like CO2 gasses and Bowhead whale data, and more. If you are someone who would like to learn more about connecting your students with the Arctic (via Zoom calls, projects, educator trips to the Arctic, free resources), I'd love to have you grab my FREE e-book and join my community. If you are really interested traveling to the Arctic. I have a few educator trips coming up, please DM me for more info. Thank you again for all you do! You all are incredible! Best Wishes, Kirsten https://odysseydiscovery.myflodesk.com/free-ebook

The walrus can remain under water for about 10 minutes. When they come to the surface for air, they will stay there for about 1 minute before going under again. Normally, they will surface every 5 to 8 minutes.
