My son and I were driving down an old gravel road when I noticed this scene through the windshield.

We stopped, grabbed our cameras, and waited for the light.

As we waited, he picked up every rock he thought was cool and stuffed it into his pockets. By the end of the night, they were completely full. 😂

I've always had a fascination with panoramic landscape photography, and this scene seemed like the perfect opportunity.

Happy Friday everyone. Have a great weekend! 🤙🏼

The Wilderness of the Upper Peninsula

This hike really got me fired up on this year's spring trip.

Let me tell you, it wasn't easy. It cost me a trekking pole, a shoe, and a GPS screen... but it was completely worth it! (Don't worry, all recovered. Don't litter, folks! 😆)

When I came upon this waterfall, I felt like I had stepped into a different world. I spent a couple of hours wandering the area, exploring, and letting the experience carry me through.

Absolutely incredible place.

Want to know where it is? Good friend and fellow photographer Jake Ring includes this waterfall and many others in his book, Lost and Forgotten Waterfalls of Michigan’s Western Upper Peninsula.

Have a great Wednesday! 🤙🏽

Dusk over Lake Superior.

If there is one thing I love about any trip to the Upper Peninsula, it's the long, gorgeous sunsets. The way the light lingers over the lake, seemingly forever on some evenings, feels like pure magic.

Happy Tuesday, everyone! And thank you for sharing if you choose to.

First light over Keweenaw Bay in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

I absolutely love how the day's first light transforms the landscape. The subtle glow and soft shadows make it feel like every detail comes alive.

Have a fantastic Monday, everyone!

I heard the waterfall long before I could see it.

The roar echoed through the forest, carrying mist aloft over the treetops. At full flow, its power is impossible to ignore. But it tells the story of how the landscape was formed.

As I sat in awe, I noticed a narrow ridge right above the main drops. I carefully worked my way up and around to the small overlook.

I set up my tripod, and took a single photograph. Afterward, I stood there for a moment.

A question came to mind...

What would this place have felt like before the boardwalks? Before viewing platforms? Before the trails were mapped and marked?

When I returned home, I removed the viewing platform from the opposite side of the falls. It wasn’t about improving the photograph. I simply wanted to see what this place might have looked like long ago.

Like a glimpse into the past.

My son asked me if we could go take a few photos earlier this week. Naturally, I agreed. We packed our bags and off we went.

It was amazing watching him interact with the world around him. Every bug, flower, even a few rocks made the list of subjects for him that night.

It reminded me of what made me fall in love with photography to begin with.

That child like curiosity. The part of us that just wants to explore the world.

This one is for you, kid.

As a young boy in 5th grade, I hiked this park on a school field trip.

This week, my two sons and my wife joined me for a hike through the area again. Birds chirped in the distance. The excitement of my kids was contagious. And there I was, thinking back to a time when I too was just like them.

The way time seems to speed up, slow down, and not move at all is something that always gets me.

Standing there watching the late afternoon sunlight highlight the leaves and the walkway, it felt like yesterday and a lifetime ago all at once.
