🍂 My Autumn Diary is Open 🍂

If you’ve been meaning to update the family photos, this is your gentle nudge.

I’ll be photographing families in and around Edinburgh and the Lothians this Autumn.

🍁 The light is softer, the colours are incredible.

🍁 You choose the location. There’s no plan or expectations. (Basically, your kids are my lead!)

🍁 Just come as you are and leave the rest to me for photos that feel like you.

Leaves put on their peak performance mid to late October, therefore it’s a limited window.

So, if autumn photos have been on your mind, now is probably a good time to get them in the diary.

So how was your summer?

I feel like this time of year just disappears before you’ve had a chance to catch your breath - one minute school is out, the next you actually know what day of the week it is again as you settle back into a normal term time rhythm.

At the start of the holidays I gave you some summer photo tips to help you actually pick up your phone and take pictures in ways that you perhaps hadn’t thought of before..

I’m curious, did any of it give you some results you were proud of?

Did you try something new, get a shot you’re genuinely happy with, or just feel a bit more confident pointing the camera at your kids without overthinking it?

There's a lot of noise out there about newborn photography windows, ten-day rules, and the idea that if you haven't booked before the birth you've somehow failed at the whole thing. The reality is much gentler than that, and a lot more flexible than most photographers will admit.

You don’t need to perform for beautiful family photographs… unless Freddy mercury is involved 🎤🎸

This newborn session was an ordinary afternoon at home: a newborn in Mum’s arms, a toddler captivated by Queen with his inflatable guitar and microphone, and a much-loved dog weaving through the room. No prompts. No pressure. Just a family feeling comfortable enough to be themselves.

It’s a kind of magic ✨

A little challenge for this week…🙌

Instead of asking everyone to “look this way and smile”, see if you can capture one genuine moment instead.

A cuddle.
A laugh.
A hand held.
A favourite toy.
A quiet pause.
An activity.

Those are the little treasures you will hold onto. So..., which one are you going to look out for this week? I’d love to know.

Challenge yourself to do one thing this week…🙌

The photographs I love most aren’t usually the big moments. They’re the ones when nothing special is happening at all. These are the moments you will treasure most.

This week, if you’re out with your family, challenge yourself to capture just one ‘in-between moment’. I’d love to see what you notice - tag me if you share it. 😊 📸❤️

THIS is truly your best friend.

Introducing, the shade. ⛅️ Are your children squinting in every summer photo? It’s probably not them, it’s most certainly the light.

Strong midday sun creates harsh shadows and drains the colour from your images.

Instead, seek shade under a tree, at the side of a building or on the edge of a woodland.

Colours are enhanced and faces are bathed in a more flattering light.

But what if there is no shade -
Simply ask the person you are capturing to turn away from the sun and re-take your picture. It’s not ideal but it is significantly better!

(Basically, the shade acts as one big filter)

Next time you’re out, try this - take the same photo in the sun and then in the shade - I think you’ll be surprised by the difference.

Never did I think this moment would stay with me.

There’s a photo of me as a child, sitting in a caravan, tucking into my cornflakes. No-one is looking at the camera. We’re just eating breakfast. Every time I see it, I’m right back there - the smell of that morning, struck matches and toast, the slight chaos of a family holiday breakfast in a small static.

My dad took that photo. He took hundreds like it and for that, I will always be thankful.

Those images are some of the most precious things I own now. Because they tell my story - which is exactly what I want to help you do with your own family photos this summer.

What I’ve learnt from him is that most of what makes a photo feel special is light, connection, and noticing moments. My dad really paid attention.

I used what I’d learnt to practice on my own family.

Over the holidays I’ll be sharing some easy tips to help you capture photos with real feeling.
