Bringing images to life! So where to now?

What is in a print?........A LOT!!! Photos need to be printed, on walls and in albums, shown to your family and friends. They are designed to be seen, not stored on your hard drive, phone or USB. They are opportunities to not only capture a moment in time, but to create a piece of art! The difference between choosing a professional printing lab to using a generic printer is enormous. It may not se

em like a big difference at first, but in the years to come, the type of ink, wether pigment of dye based and the type of media and its properties will mean the difference between a quality image that was true to colour from day one and is still looking as new 70+ years later, to one that doesn't match what was on your screen originally and worse still has faded and discoloured over time. You can take the most amazing images or make the investment in the most talented photographer to capture your memories, but that is only the first step of the process. If you then go ahead with low level printing all that talent and hard work that you see on the screen will be lost. How did cd.fine.art.prints come about? Well, a long time ago...just kidding...but seriously it evolved after years in the photography industry being a daughter of a man behind the lens. My fathers passion for photography developed that "bug" to create and capture for myself. Later in my life I found myself needing to be a strong role model for my three young daughters, someone who wasn't going to just sit back and watch life pass her by, but actually go out and live it! I'd been brought up to work hard for what you wanted in life and I wanted to be able to provide my girls with opportunities. I was juggling three jobs at the time and raising the girls when I was fortunate enough to become employed by not only an unbelievably creative woman but an incredible business entrepreneur and mentor. Kim at Lion Studios Picture Framing has encouraged and supported me the whole way through this journey. Working on the other side of photography, (not the dark side, but we will call it the light side 😉) as a digital technician, I got to see art from a different perspective. Whilst restoring, reproducing and manipulating images, some things became very apparent. The damage that was caused to the older images was mainly due to environmental influences and how they were cared for. The more recent images I was restoring (some as little as 5yrs old) was simply from the poor quality of prints that they had originally been produced as. The acids in the papers and the dye based inks really did not stand the test of time. As my clients were investing in having these valuable memories of their family restored, I wanted to be able to generate a print that unlike the originals, would stand the test of time! This led me to take the leap and provide our local community with the opportunity to have Professional Photographic and Fine Art Prints developed from their photography and reproductions of their artwork. These are quality prints, not decorator posters. The time and effort into making sure each individual image is produced to give the most accurate colours and tones is something I take pride in. Choosing the best type of media to represent the content of the image and bringing it to life is what drives me. It brings so much joy to see the results come off the printer with so much depth and life! Well starting in January 2020 right before Covid19 hit has not discouraged my goals. I still aim to produce amazing quality fine art prints and develop a strong relationship with local artists and photographers. To help bring awareness to the benefits of pigment ink prints on premium quality archival papers. To continually learn and evolve as new products and techniques become available. To continue to repair and reproduce old images wether they be from print, film or slide and enhance and process current images for those that need the production side of things taken care of. To evolve the digital art side of the business. To witness the joy of seeing their prints true to colour. To prevent the sadness I see too often in the faces where family memories have deteriorated due to using budget or low quality printing. And to promote local artists and photographers and share the talent which we have in this beautiful community. So with this enthusiastic list of goals ahead of me and a huge smile on my face, I look forward to bringing your images to life! Sending Smiles, Cathy 😁

🌅 FROM PHONE PHOTO TO FINE ART CANVAS 🌅

Just look at those colours! This beautiful local sunset has been transformed into a stunning 24 × 36” (61 × 91 cm) canvas print on our premium Moab Anasazi Matte Canvas.

Before printing, the image was professionally prepared — upscaled, refined and run through specialist noise-reduction software to clean up the image while retaining the beautiful detail, rich blacks and incredible sunset tones.

📱 And yes — this image was taken on a phone!

It’s a great example of what can be achieved when an everyday image is professionally prepared and printed using quality fine-art materials and equipment.

Want to see the quality for yourself?

Pop into Lion Studios Framing, where the Port Stephens in Print winners are currently on display as 24 × 36” canvas prints, in both landscape and portrait orientations.

What makes them particularly interesting is that they’ve come from three very different sources — a drone, a mobile phone and a professional camera.

It’s a fantastic opportunity to see just how much can be achieved through professional image preparation and printing — even when starting with a lower-resolution drone or phone image — and to visualise what a 24 × 36” statement piece could look like on your own wall.

At CD Fine Art Prints, every image is assessed and prepared individually. We care about the colour. We care about the detail. We care about the finish. You’re never just another print in the queue — we care about what we produce for you.

Have a favourite photo hiding on your phone, camera or drone? Bring it into Lion Studios and let us see what we can create from it. ✨

📸 PORT STEPHENS IN PRINT 2026 — THE ONLINE GALLERY IS NOW OPEN!

The Port Stephens in Print 2026 Online Gallery is now live on the Lion Studios website — and orders are already coming in for beautiful 24x36 stretched canvases and 8×12 fine art prints from favourites discovered at the exhibition. 🤍

If there was an image you couldn’t stop looking at, now’s your chance to bring a little piece of Port Stephens home and put it on your own wall.

And these are not your standard big-store canvases.

Every canvas is professionally produced using premium materials and exceptional print technology. Time and care goes into preparing each individual image for print, with colour, detail and print quality carefully checked before anything leaves the studio.

The result? Beautiful photographic artwork made to be displayed and enjoyed.

Want to see the quality for yourself? Pop into Lion Studios Monday–Friday and see the 2026 winning photographs enlarged and professionally produced on canvas.

One of the things we love most about purchasing from this exhibition is that your purchase directly supports the local photographer behind the image. Every photographer receives proceeds from the sale of their work.

Maybe that goes towards their next lens, camera or printing their next body of work ready for Port Stephens in Print 2027. Maybe it gets spent over the counter of another small business somewhere around the Bay.

Either way, locals are supporting locals — and creativity keeps circulating through our community. ❤️

So have another browse through the 2026 gallery, find the photograph that speaks to you and imagine it BIG on your wall.

📸 Photographed by locals. Printed locally. Supporting locals.

It’s been a little while since I’ve posted here!😅

Many of you see me regularly over on the Lion Studios pages, where I have the pleasure of consulting a couple of days each week. The rest of my time is spent behind the scenes in the print lab bringing artists’ and photographers work to life. Somehow it’s always harder to find time to post for CD than it is for Lion Studios. I get excited and in awe of the creativity that comes through their doors!

This year has certainly been a year of BIG printing projects, and one of the highlights was printing these stunning limited edition prints for Australian artist Debra Liel-Brown.

Printed on our archival Smooth Cotton Rag paper, these works retain the beautiful detail, texture and tonal range of the original artworks while providing museum-quality longevity for collectors.

Debra comes from a family of stained-glass artists spanning four generations, and her work draws on a lifetime immersed in art and creativity. (Debra Liel-Brown)
