I love and appreciate all the people who have supported my work over the years. I wouldn’t have been able to do what I’ve done without their support.

It was great to meet Jamie yesterday, and be taken on a trip down memory lane, when he brought some of my first books in to get signed. I felt honoured that he’s he had collected and taken care of them over all these years and I was now able to sign them for him and it was joy to go through some the the old photographs.

It brought back a lot of great memories of a time where Australia was still wild, free, and much more simple 🙌🌅🇦🇺

If I could give my younger self one piece of photography advice it would be to let the layers of a landscape or a scene unfold.

Over hours, days, weeks, or years, landscapes, light and the sky change as do the seasons. And nature always endures.

A long time ago I could have said “I got the shot” here at Ormiston Gorge, and many would have agreed. Now having returned to Ormiston countless times over the years I’ve seen this spot in its many moods and that persistence has rewarded me in being able to capture it from a very different perspectives.

My most recent shot being ‘Outback Renaissance’ - when the rare flood waters rose and renewed the land.

… But this day was not a day for taking photographs. Sometimes I like to just sit, be still, and recharge in the beauty of nature.

Photo tip & backstory: How to get a true perspective 📸
I’m back at the location where I shot my popular image “between heaven and earth”.

People often want to know about the making-of my shots. The behind the scenes story of finding the location, and the technical details on how, and why, I captured it the way I have.

For me it usually comes down to 3 things; overcoming fear, being patient, and finding a way to capture the true perspective.

THE PHOTOGRAPH DOESN’T END AT THE SHUTTER ||
One of the greatest lessons I learnt while working alongside Ken Duncan was that a photograph is never simply captured and finished.

It continues through the edit, the test print, the choice of paper, the frame, the lighting, the story—and eventually, the person standing before it.

I watched test prints return to the lab because something was missing. Ken would sometimes look at one and simply say:
“You (we) need to turn the lights on.”

There was no formula or technical explanation. It was about learning to recognise when an image truly came alive.
