It’s been a BUSY week doing things that haven’t involved shooting surf, getting salty or even catching sunrise. I missed some decent waves on Friday and over the weekend too - but sometimes that’s tough luck.

But here’s a few frames from a week or so ago down at the local in . I am always trying to find new angles, new ways to work with the early morning light. You know I’m a sucker for a silhouette.

I’ll be back in the surf soon I hope 🤞🏼

Finding some fresh frames down at the local yesterday at sunrise 🌅

I was down in out of sheer necessity to get some coffee beans for the home machine. I threw the camera bag in just in case and boy I’m glad I did. As soon as I got out of the car, the sun started popping over the cloud band, people were out and got some snaps.

I saw a post recent that talked about the fact that you can never take the exact same photograph again… it’s a moment that will never be recreated exactly as it was that moment you hit the shutter button. That really stuck with me.

But another thing it made me think, is how damn stupid gatekeeping is. People can copy settings, but they cant copy an exact moment or be in the exact place at the same time.

The other thing is your own style, interpretation and photographic eye. Another thing that can’t simply be copied. This is a culmination of the hours of learning, experimenting, failing… the reps. Working out what you like, what you don’t like.

So here are a few photos with all my settings and the gear I used… because why not! 📸

Absolutely stoked to receive Matt Formston ‘s book ‘Why Not’ in the mail recently. This one is a special one because I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Matt, getting to know him personally and was privileged with the chance to give feedback on the book in its development.

Matt’s achievements make for a LONG list, but it’s worth mentioning a few:
- 4x Adaptive Surfing World Champ
- Cycling world champion & world record holder at UCI World Champs
- Paralympian at 2016 Rio games
- Guiness World Record holder for biggest wave ridden by para athlete (51ft!!!)
- 2023 Heavy Water Award winner
- Senior executive at Optus
- Member of the Order of Australia

It’s quite an extraordinary, at times confronting story. But one thing I love about Matt - he doesn’t hold back. This book peels back the many layers and experiences through Matt’s life that have brought him to where he is today. Can’t wait to give this one another read 📕

This all began on a flight from Sydney to Wellington for a work shoot. I had 3hrs of blissful child free time to kill and came across TheBlindSeaFilm on the in-flight entertainment.

I was absolutely GLUED to the screen. Such an epic documentary about how Matt worked his way to his now record holding wave at Nazare, Portugal.

It was many months later that through a fairly off the cuff conversation about finding a keynote speaker for our upcoming marketing conference, that I threw Matt’s name in the ring because I knew he had a great story to tell.

Fast forward to September 2025, Matt travelled down to Kiama to deliver a keynote to our Marketing cohort. For someone that can’t see the room - boy does he know how to command everyone’s attention.

I also got the chance to have brekky and a coffee with Matt and chat about all things surfing. He now lives on the Central Coast, so we shared stories some of the local breaks and how he navigates them without his vision.

Matt and I pictured here after his talk with a signed copy of his children’s book ‘Surfing in the dark’ which I was able to take home and read to my two girls.

This is the first of its kind in Australia, combining pictures, words and braille all in one edition.

This is me packing light 😅😅

I’m off to my work conference at and want to try and get out and shoot either early morning or golden hour in the evening on a few of the days.

My Tenba Bags Australia Axis 32L is an absolute beast. Fits everything easily including my DJI

Couldn’t narrow my Canon ANZ lens selection beyond what I’ve got here. Got 24 to 200mm covered on L glass and my FAVOURITE lens goes in the bag every time!

Let’s hope the weather turns on for me. But of a gloomy morning today on the coast.
