This extended family session at Trevallyn Reserve was one of those shoots that felt meaningful for a really simple reason: everyone was there.

I had photographed Olivia and Harrison earlier in the year, but Daniel missed that session while he was away fighting bushfires in Victoria. This time he was there, along with Piper, Sherrie, and the wider family.

There was winter light, lots of laughs, Harrison keeping a very close eye on every dog that walked past, and finished artwork heading into several homes.

In-home sessions are never really about the house.
They’re about the feeling of being there. The couch where everyone piles on top of each other, the bedroom where bedtime stories happen, the kitchen where someone is usually asking for a snack. People sometimes worry their home isn’t tidy enough or stylish enough, but that’s not what makes the photos meaningful. What matters is that it’s your space, and your children will remember it because it’s where their family life is happening right now.

Pets bring a very particular kind of energy to a session, and I mean that in the best possible way.
Sometimes they are beautifully cooperative and look like they’ve trained for this moment their entire lives. Sometimes they are absolutely not that dog. Either way, I love including them because they are part of your family as much as anyone else. They often loosen everyone up too. There’s something about a dog barging into the frame or trying to sit in exactly the wrong spot that makes the whole thing feel more real, and usually more fun.

Siblings are one of my favourite things to photograph, mostly because they’re so unpredictable.
Sometimes they are beautifully sweet with each other and sometimes they’re one eye roll away from a full-blown argument. Usually they’re both within the same five minutes. That’s part of what makes sibling photos so special. I’m not trying to force some perfectly polished version of their relationship. I want to catch the closeness, the mischief, the way they annoy each other, and the way they still come back together. That’s what will feel true when you look back on it later.

Winter family photos can be absolutely beautiful — soft light, cosy layers, rich colours, and kids cuddling in close because warmth suddenly matters more than personal space.

But if you’re planning photos in winter, there’s one thing I really want you to think about:

dress for the actual weather.

Not the weather you hoped for.
Not the weather the outfit looked best in.
The actual Tasmanian winter weather happening on the day.

I think a lot of dads and partners arrive at a session expecting it to be a bit painful.
They’re imagining lots of standing around, being told to smile, and wondering how long it’s all going to take. Then the session starts and they realise it’s actually much more relaxed than they expected. There’s movement, talking, playing with the kids, and a lot less awkwardness than they had braced themselves for. It usually doesn’t take long before the shoulders drop and everyone settles in, and that shift makes such a difference to the photos.

I don’t think the value of printed photographs really sinks in until you live with them.
When images are properly printed and sitting in your home, they stop being something you mean to get around to one day and start becoming part of the everyday backdrop of family life. You see them walking down the hallway, as you pass the shelf in your bedroom, or while you’re tidying the lounge room for the fiftieth time that week. That’s very different from a folder on your computer you fully intended to open again and somehow never did. Printed photos have a way of staying present in your life, and that’s why they matter so much.

There’s a reason I don’t send out a big online gallery for families to sort through on their own.
I know that probably sounds less convenient on paper, but I’ve found that when people are left to make those decisions alone, usually late at night on the couch while they’re half distracted, it becomes much harder to do well. At your viewing appointment, you’re seeing the images properly. We can look at them together, talk through what matters most, and work out what makes sense for your home. It turns a potentially overwhelming job into a guided process, which is exactly why I do it that way.

Older babies photograph so beautifully, and I think they sometimes get unfairly overlooked because everyone is so focused on the tiny newborn window.
Yes, a brand new baby has a very particular kind of softness to them, but an older baby brings something different. They might be more alert, more expressive, more likely to really look at you. There’s often a lot more interaction happening by then, and that can make the photos feel especially rich. So if you didn’t manage to organise newborn photos in those first couple of weeks, that doesn’t mean you’ve missed your chance. Not even a little bit.
