we often get asked how many people can we include in our portrait session. The more the merrier! We love doing big extended family shoots with grandparents and even great-grandparents, family groups with kids and pets and anything else that is a part of your family. Its all about family and connections so if you can organise them,. we will shoot them!

Another option you have for location is our studio. Either inside for a more formal studio look, or in our outdoor studio amongst our big granite boulders. Wherever we decide, I will be looking for some nice gentle light to make your portraits look amazing. In all of the location options, the theory of what to wear remains the same, simple , plain mid-tones, with no patterns, stripes or logos will always make a pleasing image, but at the end of the day, I will photograph you in whatever you turn up in ( but that is how it will look in your pictures too! )

Because our portraiture is in black and white, the actual colours of your clothing isn’t as important as the tone (light or dark). What I am trying to achieve is for the clothes to disappear and not become a feature of the images - I prefer your faces, hands and personalities to be the key elements in your portraits. It is also best if one person doesn’t stand out from the group, so avoid having five people in dark and one person in light clothes, as that will draw attention to that person.

As far as the issue of where we shoot your portraits is concerned, we can also shoot at a favourite park or location that you as a family have any affinity with. - sometimes this works best, especially if you want to include pets. Including a place that means something to your family now will have added benefits that if you should move or your situation changes, the images will remind you of how and where you were as a family at this stage of your lives.

Once we have taken the pictures, we will invite you back to the studio to look at and choose the images that your are going to be displaying in your home. This is definitely the hard bit, choosing the pictures that you love, and that are going to fill your home and your heart. We can show you some suggestions of how those images would work well together for the space you would like to display them in. This is a creative process that we will work out together, and at the end of the session, we will have the perfect portrait solution for your family.

We like to encourage people to bring things that are key to their personality. If your 3 year old doesn’t go anywhere without his blankie, bring it! Musical instruments, hobbies or favourite hats, whatever we can use to make the portraits more personal is a good thing. If you are bringing pets, then a handful of treats are a good idea.

We will give you screen resolution digital files of all the images that you order via an online gallery. You will be able to download these images and also share them via social media, email and text. We will show you how this works when you come in for your pre-shoot design appointment. you can also opt to just purchase digital files, but as we are focused on giving you archival prints that will last for generations, we don’t encourage printing your own images, and it is by far the most expensive option if you do.

A few years ago my mum decided that we should do a big group shot. Mum and Dad, their 3 boys, their wives and children, all in the family home. I was the professional photographer in the family, and so taking the picture was my job. That was the easy part! Getting everyone together at the same time was going to be much harder. At the time, my two brothers were both living overseas, and it eventually took just over 2 years before we could make the picture. But we did it, and Mum was happy! We weren’t to know it at the time, but that was the last time we were all together. Dad died a year later and we are all so pleased that we have that picture. Over the last 33 years that we have been running our studio in Launceston, I have always been very aware that the pictures I am making could become much more than just a record of the day, and I take the trust that our clients place in me very seriously.

Smiling for the camera is an act. Most adults are quite bad actors, and most of the time kids don’t even try! Emotions are what makes memorable images, and they are always lurking, just behind the mask that most of us wear in public. The good news is that with just a little bit of space and the close proximity of people we love and care about, the emotions are hard to contain, and beautiful pictures are there for the taking
