It was an evening full of prizes and surprises as the Filipino-Tasmanian community strut their stunning gowns and splendid Filipiniana costumes to celebrate the 126th Philippine Independence Day at the Tasman Room of Wrest Point Hotel Casino.
Graced by the Philippine Consul of Tasmania, Mr Rick Van Neutegem, the night became more interesting when world renowned Indigenouism Artist, Elito Circa a.k.a “Amangpintor”, captured the crowd’s fancy with his unconventional method of creating his masterpieces.
The intricate pieces of art, which he made that evening produced a buzz in the hall when art enthusiasts battled it out in a silent auction. The victors brought home their “Amangpintor” haul with a big grin on their faces.
However, the bigger smiles came from the winners of this year’s grand raffle draw, wherein almost $4,000 in cash prizes were given away.
Furthermore, the pageantry produced an A-list of winners with Norine Correa (Lakambini), Hyacinth Asinas De Mesa (Mutya) and Gloria Reyes ( Hiyas) taking the crowns for their respective categories for the ladies. Their counterparts, Max Leon Lakos (Lakan) Christian Salvador ( Maharlika) and Alex Altman ( Ginoo) lorded it over the rest of the gentlemen.
The programme reached its climax with a dynamite cultural performance from the Hugyaw Performing Group, led by Juliet Garcia and Randy Lauderes who is taking a sabbatical starting next year.
The night was capped with some sore legs from heaps of dancing, but with hearts full of joy, love and friendship.
The organiser, PACT, Inc led by its President Jyosh Vizcarra and Vice President Eric Ruelo, is grateful to all sponsors, volunteers and attendees who made this event a success; a grand curtain call for their term that is about to end.
Indeed, it was a night to remember. One for ages. One for the record.
