Photographing Anton Smit’s sculptures at Kirstenbosch with the Canon PowerShot G3 X has reminded me that image quality isn't always the most important thing.

Sometimes the camera simply needs to help us slow down, look wider and see the relationship between art, nature and place.

Verreaux’s Eagle (Aquila verreauxii)

One of the unexpected highlights from a recent sanctuary observation visit to World of Birds in Hout Bay. I knew these magnificent eagles from the broader southern African landscape, but was reminded today that they are also part of the Western Cape’s natural heritage — including the Cape Peninsula.

A striking bird, beautifully adapted to its mountainous environment.

Finding Colour in the Rain

Sometimes a photograph is less about the camera and more about noticing a fleeting moment.

A lone pedestrian, a bright yellow coat, a white umbrella, and the muted tones of a rain-soaked street came together for just an instant. From above, the scene became an almost abstract composition of colour, shape and movement.

Captured with the Canon PowerShot G3 X at ISO 5000 in challenging light, this image is a reminder that compelling photographs are often found in everyday moments.

The versatility and image quality of the G3 X continue to impress me, particularly when working in RAW and processing with Lightroom Classic.

Photography is, above all, about seeing.

'A Face in Blue...' Woodbridge Island

This sculpture on Woodbridge Island (today) immediately reminded me of the expressive portrait sculptures of Anton Smit. Having previously photographed one of his confirmed works at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, I was struck by the resemblance in form, scale and artistic expression.

Whether this is another work by Smit or simply evokes a similar sculptural language, it was an unexpected and fascinating photographic discovery.

One of those crisp Cape Town winter mornings where everything comes together. The Milnerton Lighthouse stands watch over Table Bay as an anchored cargo vessel waits offshore in calm conditions.

I'm continually impressed by what the Canon EOS 7D Mark II is capable of, especially when the light is this good.
