Yann Macherez Photography Move - Feel - Share I’m a French freelance photographer, based in Cape Town since 2014. These photographers put humans as reference in each of their photographs.

I do many different types of assignments, which is really exciting and a perfect fit for my personality. I have worked for various big companies like National Geographic, Expedia, South African Tourism, Pixopolitan, L’express and We Demain, and one global project: Today-Project. My work is a reflection of my life - of my experiences, meetings, reflections and approach related to our proper existen

ce. I draw inspiration from the work of Henri Cartier-Bresson, Alex Webb or Sebastiao Salgado. A vision of the world - of their world - and society that interrogates, asks and amuses the photographer as much as the viewer. Their work leaks out humanity with courage, humility and sensitivity. Photography made me comprehend who I am, as a human. I capture life surrounding me, to understand my own existence. The pursuit of fulfillment as a photographer is an eternal search of oneself.

- Groundation -
I never would have imagined this.
And yet… the Basque Country is about to become, once again, the land where my second children will be born
Life is full of surprises. And this one is a beautiful gift
Everything here resonates deeply with me: the strength of the mountains, the power of the ocean, the warmth of the people. A land that’s alive, vibrant, grounding. A place where I - and my family - can truly grow.

- Land of Nāgas -
A year and a half ago, I set foot on the land of my father-in-law.
A country that runs through the veins of my beloved .kiffeuse and through those of our little boy.
A place that whispered to me of slowness, presence, and connection to the unseen.
Its beauty moved me. Its harmony stayed with me.
Today, this land already speaks to the soul on its way, the one who will soon expand our world.
And I can’t wait to help her discover her roots.

“Our home now holds its missing song,
A space for you we've built so long.
You made us rich, made us whole
The final piece, the brightest soul.”

- International day of Biological Diversity -
The International Day for Biodiversity was created in 1993 to shine a light on issues affecting nature.Three decades later, protecting ecosystems has become more urgent than ever.
Biodiversity is the living fabric of our planet. It underpins human well-being in the present and the future, and its rapid decline threatens nature and people alike: When biodiversity has a problem, humanity has a problem!
Several species have already suffered irreversible consequences or are just about to:
- Three species disappear every hour
- 100 to 150 species disappear every day
- 15.000 to 80.000 species disappear every year
Our relationship with nature and with other living beings needs a radical rethink to address this issue: we need to design and create a truly shared world.
Only once we realize that we are part of the solution will we be able to put a stop to the damage we are causing to nature.

- French National Day -
It's the first time since my return in France that I cover the July 14th festivities in France. This time, it was on the big beach of Biarritz, full of people.
This shooting was also for me an exercise in my training at I learn a lot during this one, on all the fields of activities related to photojournalism.
You can see the complete series on my Hans Lucas profile: https://hanslucas.com/ymacherez/photo/57097

- The Self and The I -
Last weekend, I finally had the chance to meet all my colleagues of the Hans Lucas Transmission 2022 class.
Beyond the complete learning process, the precious support of our trainers and the excitement of discovering each other's work, it is a wonderful human adventure that we are offered to live.
This will continue , a week during which we will have the chance to continue learning by showing our portfolios and our work. One more step to integrate the complex but necessary workings of this profession.
The series presented here is the result of a work requested during the internship, the difficult exercise of the portrait. .kiffeuse and myself have collaborated on this one: Through a protocol using LED tubes, we wanted to reveal the combination that make the Self and the I. The I, color that faces the subject was chosen by the latter, represents the emotional state of the moment. The Self, color that illuminates the back of the subject was channeled by and represents the light vibration of the person photographed.
The result can be seen as a color identity photo of the facets of our being. And a human experience to share that we really enjoyed.

-World Ocean Day-
Oceans
As far back as I can remember, they have always been by my side. They saw me grow up, welcomed me in their envelope, amazed me with their majesty, and hit me with their ferocity.
World Ocean Day is celebrated to remind us that the oceans play a vital role in our livelihoods. The oceans are a critical component of our biosphere and play an important role in contributing to climate moderation and the oxygen we need to survive. Without them, humanity could not exist. That is why it is vital to act together to protect them as much as possible. It is important to raise public awareness of their fundamental role in our ecosystem and the negative impact that human activities have on them.
Last year, with Oliver Petrie, we wanted to participate in our own way to the conservation of our oceans. We documented the 0megot team in their eco-adventure, 4 swimmers who swam down the Seine (380 km between Paris and Deauville) to encourage people to adopt a simple gesture: throw your cigarette butt in the trash bin. They are the first waste found in our oceans.
Here is few things that we can do, to preserve our Oceans and their ecosystems:
- Stop eating fish and any sea creatures. More information here:
- Reduce our plastic consumption. More information here:
- Don’t throw your cigarette butts, surgical masks on the ground. More information here:
- Participate in coastal and river clean-ups with or

-The Burn Is Coming (Back)-
Can you smell it? The wind, the dust, the ashes…FREEDOM.
Can you feel it? The love, the beat, the magic…FREEDOM.
Yes, it’s coming…back!
After three years without any Burn in the Tankwa Karoo, the Afrikaburn organisation bring the love back: An experiment in participation, creative expression and community building.
The last edition was also my last burn…and I still can remember all of those. How can’t I?
Wishing a beautiful and mystical journey to all the happy 2022 burners. We need this!

- Concrete Jungle -
Johannesburg is a city like no other.
Filled with Skyscrapers, almost completely abandoned.
At its bottom, the muffled sound of the busy streets. The smells of chichen braaied.
A strange feeling, the memory of a great and vibrant city, only accessible to fews at that time.
History made its path and now, Jozi is still vibrant. spécial. inspiring. wild.
Maboneng, a Sotho word meaning “place of light”, is a fitting name for a district that has fast become a center of creative energy for Johannesburg’s urban artists. I’ve been amazed how « propertuity », the organization behind the re-energization of this neighborhood, brought the people back to this part of the city with social equality

-Fight for our Land-
Pondoland is one of the most remote areas in South Africa. The Amadiba people have lived there for centuries, a community with strong traditions and limited resources.
Their territory is under threat from several mining companies that want to exploit the minerals in the red dunes that run along the coast. This natural gem is full of wildlife and unique geological formations, with which the Amadiba people have lived in perfect communion for generations.
Siya, one of the leaders of this community, is fighting to preserve the land of his ancestors. A priceless heritage, his only possession.

Heritage Day epitomizes the cultural and ethnic diversity of South Africa. It serves as a reminder to South Africans to embrace the spirit of UBuntu and show love for one another - because indeed, there is Unity in Diversity.
South Africa, I miss you every day.
