Overpowering Midday Sun with Canon HSS Flash

During Nov 2023 I made reference to an update I will do in how to use a Canon Speedlite flash (and some cases - if available - from the built-in / pop-up flash in Canon EOS cameras) in capturing day-time images with camera flash – using HSS (in ETTL or Manual Flash Mode).

HSS refers to 'High Speed Synch' flash photography when using a Canon camera flash over its default / limited flash synch speed. Most DSLR’s / Mirrorless cameras (if not all) will only provide a maximum shutter speed with flash between i.e. 1/250s - 1/300s. Meaning the highest shutter speed that is obtainable in all shooting Modes will be limited to the embedded synch speed.

In overcoming this limitation the photographer can either (via) the built-in flash or external Speedlite flash settings in the camera set higher shutter speeds (up to i.e. 1/4000s - 1/8000s) by enabling HSS. Please note this function is not available on all Canon EOS DSLR cameras.

The objective of HSS flash is to provide a higher shutter speed for a softer light – i.e. to fill the shadows during day-time / sunny conditions. This effectively means that you can push the flash to use the camera’s highest shutter speed i.e. 1/8000s.

My example / attached image:
This image was captured during a summer’s day at +- 14:00 with a blustering wind rapidly moving the yellow flower from side to side. To manage these challenges I used a Canon Speedlight flash set on HSS at 1/8000s.

The advantages of using HSS in attached Yellow Flower image:
- To freeze to motion (in the blistering wind)
- To reduce the brightness of the yellow flower by exposing via HSS

Without HSS this flower would have been totally over-exposed. Although it’s possible to stop the motion without using HSS, it would not assist in providing a proper exposure for the bright yellow flower.

P.S. Something to keep in mind: experimenting with various Apertures / Shutter Speeds will influence the overall exposure / and or background lighting.

Canon Equipment used:
- Canon EOS 70D
- Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens
- Canon Speedlite 430EX III-RT (with Diffuser)

Wild flowers with Canon EOS 6D / EF 70-300mm lens (and Extension Tube)

During this morning's training we ‘focussed’ on larger apertures photographing wild flowers in the morning sun. The sun may have been a little high (bright / over-exposing areas of the flowers) for this type of photography training (but, we had to get through some theory first😊).

While my client was experimenting with various larger apertures I took quick advantage of the time / light to take a couple of snapshots with my setup.

Advantage of the extension tube:
It reduced the minimum focus distance (MFD) between the lens and the subject. Not to be confused with a close-up lens filter. The close-up filter also functions with the Autofocus / other electronics of the camera and lens / paring. I personally find the extension tube to be more effective for this type of photography (and easier to use) than the lens close-up filter (with more of a objective to act as n pseudo macro lens).

It can take a while to become comfortable using an extension tube / or close-up lens filter ito distance and what apertures to use.

It can be a very cost effective addition for ‘close-up’ work in reasonable light. It is much cheaper to use a extension tube that to purchase a macro lens, especially if you’re only going yo use a macro lens a few times a year.

Advantage of using a Full Frame camera for flower photography:
Due to its larger sensor compered to the APS-C (crop) sensor it captures more light and provides more background blur.

An APS-C (crop sensor) could have its own advantages of creating more magnification (as my client experimented with). This will depend on the (quality / focal length) of the lens used.

Apertures used with the attached flowers:
- Image 1 = f/5.6
- Image 2 = f/11
- Image 3 = f/5.6
- Image 4 = f/8

Canon Equipment Used:
- Canon EOS 6D (Full Frame body)
- Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens
- Canon Extension Tune EF 25 II

Learning Photography in the Comfort of your own Home / Garden

Private Nature Photography Training Cape Town / Cape Peninsula

Canon EOS / EOS R / Powershot Camera and Photography training sessions around the Cape Peninsula.

I recently started an initiative where I travel to clients for facilitating my private Canon Camera / Photography Training Sessions in the comfort of their own homes and / or garden environments.

This type of training is most suitable for garden birds, butterflies and flowers. Many other close-up subjects will also be discussed and / or photographed. Practical training sessions could be in-house / in the garden or at Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden (also for incorporating some landscape photography if required). Birds in Flight photography training practical will depend on proximity to areas where there are birds in flight to photograph. Birds in Flight sessions at Woodbridge Island could also be worked into a private programme (if required).

Morning training sessions are always recommended, but other options are also available.

Private Photography Training Costs:
The costs for any of my traveling training is the same as offered in my studio at Milnerton with a added cost-effective / pro-rata traveling cost for covering fuel expenses. Individual traveling costs will be calculated relevant to client address distance from my studio in Milnerton.

From R750 per 4-hour session for Canon EOS / EOS R photographers. Rates for Canon Powershot photographers will always be slightly less - specific cost will depending on the PowerShot camera used. This is the same rate structure as used in-studio in Milnerton / Woodbridge Island. Practical shooting sessions will be integrated into the training.

A typical training programme of three training sessions (x 4 to 5 hours) For EOS / EOS R cameras is R2 000-00 (excluding traveling costs). One or two longer sessions may also be considered.

Small Group Workshops across the Cape Peninsula:
Small group photography workshops of i.e. 2 to 5+ delegates with Canon EOS / EOS R / PowerShot cameras and lenses) are also options (if it can be arranged by the group). Logistics, location and other costs will be calculated to make it more cost-effective per delegate. Please note during these workshops Canon PowerShot photographers will pay the same rate as all other delegates (with EOS / EOS R cameras).

Contact Me via WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger on this Page or visit my website for more options. Link is at the bottom of this post.

Photography Training / Learning Objectives:
Tailor-made (individual / small group) learning programmes are prepared for specific Canon EOS R / EOS DSLR / PowerShot camera and photography requirements with the following broad objectives:
- Individual Needs / Gear Analysis
- Canon EOS Camera Menus / Settings
- Exposure Settings and Options
- Specific Genre Application(s) and Skills Development
