Dawn Holm Photography

Dawn Holm Photography I’m a fine art photographer drawn to wild places, quiet moments, and the stories they tell.

My work is created to bring a sense of calm, connection, and place into the spaces where you live.

Not every photograph announces itself.

Some ask you to stop. To look closer, and stay longer.

Hidden among the moss gardens of Sanzen-in.

Kyoto is often remembered for its grand temples and cherry blossoms, but some of my favorite discoveries were much quieter.

The places you almost walk past. The details that reveal themselves only when you slow down.

A weathered Jizō statue tucked among the moss gardens at Sanzen-in Temple in Kyoto.

I kept returning to this quiet little stone figure while editing my macro work, and found myself drawn to both versions for different reasons, one for atmosphere, one for form and stillness.

I’m just curious, as a viewer, does the atmosphere of the garden’s palette speak to you more? Or the texture of the stone? Let me know in the comments!

“Illuminate one corner.” A humble Buddhist philosophy: even lighting one small corner of the world has meaning.
Field notes from Sanzen-in Temple, Kyoto.

Rock gardens, weathered wood, fragments of Buddhist inscriptions, and the quieter details of spring in Japan.

I’ve been lucky enough to photograph a lot of mothers in the wild.

Protective mothers.
Patient mothers.
Mothers teaching survival one moment at a time.

Watching these coastal brown bears in Alaska has always reminded me that motherhood, the care, the exhaustion, the protection, and the quiet moments in between; it feels surprisingly familiar everywhere.

Happy Mother’s Day ❤️

I also shared more of this, about ‘Motherhood Observed in the Wild,’ linked in Stories.

What motherhood looks like in the north.

A polar bear mother guiding her cubs across the tundra near Churchill. It can be one of the harshest environments on earth, and still a place where care, patience, and protection quietly endure.

I wrote a longer reflection this week about observing motherhood in the wild.

Keage Incline during sakura season felt like walking through a tunnel of blossoms. A very popular destination during the season.

I came for the cherry blossoms. I photographed them a lot,
in different places, different times of day.

They became to feel less like a subject
and more like something that holds everything together.
framing the landscape,
marking the season,
Interacting with everyday life. It became a way of seeing.

Here, according to legend, this place, Seiryuden Temple, perched upon Mt. Higashiyama in eastern Kyoto, is where the story of this ancient city began.

The gold is easy to see. It’s the framing that makes you stay.

This is the iconic Kinkaku-ji, or the “Golden Pavilion,” a world-famous Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan.
