Recently spent a few days in the Lamar Valley of Yellowstone National learning a few things about wildlife photography. It takes a lot of patience, luck, and tolerating cold. How cold, -30F, it’s really cold. The Native Americans called the Coyote “Song Dog”. That seems pretty fitting.

Leaving the campground, it was misting slightly. The perfect conditions to give you a total bust, with the mountain hidden in clouds, or perhaps some really good light. I’d already gotten the photo that I had planned, and knowing that I would be hiking in the dark, I was in somewhat of a hurry. At some point, the conditions looked to be worth at least a couple more mosquito bites!

These cottonwood trees that are found in Utah along river banks have always fascinated me. People get pretty excited over golden Aspen trees, but let’s show the stately cottonwood some love.

The Native American legend of says the face is that of Ewauna, the beautiful daughter of Chief Siskiyou. Having never seen the ocean before, she wandered into the sea carrying a basket with her cat and kittens nestled inside, and followed by her faithful dog.

Everyone knows at the the Alabama Hills for sunrise you look west, at the Sierras. And I was, and then I hear the loudest sounds of some tricked out overlander flying down the dirt road. Then I noticed that all the dust rising between the rocks looked sort of cool.

I have been wanting to give a try at some wildlife photography. This little red fox appeared twice in the same area on consecutive nights. Most of the time he was scampering around the limbs of some small trees or bushes. I thought he was “climbing” the tree, but when I look it up, only the gray fox can climb trees. The red fox is unable to use its claws to scale vertically. The claws are more suited to digging. Hum, but the red fox can jump six feet into the air and leap from branch to branch! By the way he hung around for me, it was as if he was saying “please, please take my picture and make me famous on Instagram!” Okay buddy, your on the Gram.
