Like many seniors I photograph, Kayla didn’t really know exactly what to expect during her senior photo session, which is very common. In fact, most people I shoot with have told me they’ve never even had a photoshoot before, and if so it was years and years ago, so naturally there are butterflies. Well of course I knew she had no reason to be nervous. Just a few snaps in, I showed her some of her pics in the camera, she was excited and was a new person for the rest of the afternoon! I mean, her confidence continued to climb so much throughout the day that she decided to venture out waist deep in Banks Channel. It was a gorgeous day but it was still March then. Brrrr! She didn’t care and I loved it for her!
I also very much appreciate how flexible with scheduling that she and her mom were. There were other seniors who had conflicts of their own and needed to swap days. The Andersons were always willing to help accommodate them which was very unselfish of them! I kept praying they would be rewarded with beautiful weather, and they did! That sunset was just jaw dropping!
It was so awesome working with Kayla and mom Sherri! Kayla was fantastic to shoot with!
Some of these pics should be in magazines, perhaps they will be. 😊
She is off to Chapel Hill at the end of summer.
Congratulations Kayla and good luck to you at Carolina!

A couple of short years ago, I photographed Isabella for her sweet 16 pictures, and it was awesome to be asked back again to work with her and her family again, this time for her senior pictures. Since then and now, she’s stayed pretty busy, and focused, because she’s managed to earn her associate’s degree a whole TWO WEEKS before even graduating high school!
I mean, come on, really?! Add in being captain of the Laney cheer team, and it’s clear Isabella has never been afraid of hard work.
Her mom Donna has also been hard at work, getting everything perfectly prepared for Isa’s graduation. What do I mean? Making bouquets, sashes, buttons, announcements, ribbons and Grad Swag Bags with tissues, makeup wipes and chapstick. She has 2 graduations to prep for ya know! She was certainly ready for this photo session, with a slew of props including giant 2026 balloons and a bubble machine! All of this is pure proof of just how proud Isa’s family is for her!
What was kinda funny was she and I were taking her photos, we’d look back and see her mom and dad off to the side, having their own little photoshoot. They got Isa and the props to this point, and I took it from there! These small in-between moments always remind me these sessions are about more than senior pictures — they’re about celebrating an entire family reaching one of life’s biggest milestones together.
This certainly is a time to celebrate, and it’s pretty clear big things are coming for Isabella. UNCW’s getting a good one!
Congratulations Isa and good luck at UNCW!

I was impressed with Kayley well before I met her to shoot her senior pictures. Her stepmom Caitlin initially set up the session, but Kayley followed up to thank me for taking them for her, which I thought was pretty cool. She actually already had senior photos taken at the beginning of the school year, but wanted photos that felt more like her. That experience also gave her a better idea of what exactly she wanted, and she expressed that vision to me, which helped her get the photos SHE wanted. Not a lot of kids take that kind of initiative.
We were faced with a windy gloomy day, but that never affected Kayley, which was something else that impressed me about her. She had to practice a lot of patience while that wind was kicking, and she never lost her smile in the process. We also had a technical issue to overcome which unfortunately wiped out hundreds of photos. She wasn’t phased, kept a positive attitude and confidence that it would work out. A couple weeks later we had our reshoot, and it did in fact work out. It’s a milestone year for her family, not only because of her accomplishments, but her little sister Sullivan is also graduating-from preschool.
She was so excited to show off her very own cap and gown!
Kayley certainly sets a great example to follow.
She’s already earned her CNA certification, (yeah in high school!) and will be attending ECU in the fall.
Congratulations Kayley and good luck to you in Greenville!

Annabelle’s senior session quickly became Annabelle and Cody’s senior session when we met downtown. I think it’s awesome when a young couple wants to use a photo shoot to create and document some genuine memorable moments for themselves in this stage of their lives. Sure beats a selfie huh? Frankly, as convenient as selfies are, they can’t come close to telling stories and reliving moments like what a photographer’s photos can do.
We spent time walking around downtown and Greenfield Lake, snapping individual and couples pics. It’s funny, Cody was kinda quiet and reserved, while Annabelle, who travels the country competitively cheering, is certainly the more outgoing of the two, but you would never know this seeing the way they love to make each other laugh.
It’s was such an awesome time with Cody, Annabelle and her mom Eve, and I love how their photos turned out! Good news for me is we’ve got another shoot set for this weekend!
Cody will be going to trade school for HVAC repair, while Annabelle is preparing for life at Florida Atlantic University in the fall. Congratulations to both of you!

There’s something about witnessing someone’s passion, whatever it is that just drives them every minute of every day, that’s always inspiring to me. We all have ours, you can certainly see mine, and now you know Gavin’s. Skating is not just what he loves to do in his spare time, it’s part of who he is. No putting on stuffy outfits to be or look like someone he isn’t. This is all I can ever ask of a senior, or anyone else for that matter, just simply be yourself.
One of his favorites places to skate is in front of Wilmington City Hall, only they don’t want him there. He mentioned a few times where security has previously showed up to run him off. Welp, it’s shoot day and ya know, challenge accepted. His parents and I may or may not have been a bad influence by encouraging some pics there. Whoopsy. 🤷🏼‍♂️ It was so worth it, as security must have been napping while Gavin broke all their rules, under our direct supervision of course. Truth be told, he’s a very polite, respectful young man who was so easy to work with, all while maintaining his fearless, laid back edge that comes with being a skater.
Had to let Gavin show off his “other” 4 wheel ride downtown at sunset. We also stopped by CFCC’s Union Station, and my favorite brick alley to shoot. which are also where I photographed his older sister Sophia a few years ago. It really is an honor being able to work with the same families again, and watching another chapter unfold.
He’s almost done with high school of course, but will soon earn his Associates degree in Engineering before transferring to State or ECU for Mechanical Engineering.
Congratulations again Gavin and enjoy the last weeks of your senior year!

I talk a lot about the weather in my photography posts. Well, when your business relies on accurate forecasts, not only to work out in it, but many times featuring elements OF it to be included in photos, it requires a ton of my attention. Making scheduling, or rescheduling, decisions based on the weather has almost single handedly turned my hair from blonde to gray since I started this RKP thing. Sometimes it turns out waaaay better than forecasted, which I will take any day of the week. Case in point, when Preslee’s mom, Heather and I were finalizing the best potential days for her session, our available days were dwindling before the cold winter weather came. After being cold rained out the first attempt, we landed on a weekend where the high was expected to be 48 and cloudy. Not horrible, but definitely not ideal for senior portraits. She was prepared to bundle up in a blanket every 10 minutes or so. To our delight, the forecast was way off. It was 65 and sunny 😎, which is huge and may as well have been 90 in our minds! It definitely helped keep Preslee smiling, not that she needed another reason to be happy. She was dually enrolled so she earned a high school diploma and community college degree, earning her cosmetology license all at the same time. Wow! Now she’s already working in a salon, doing her part to make us all look good!
Congratulations Preslee and good luck with the salon!

I guess you can say we’ve known Halley’s mom, Alison for about as long as Kendall’s been in school. Mrs. Bellamy, was her 2nd grade teacher at Murrayville Elementary (Kendall is now finishing up her junior year at Charlotte). Though I wished and prayed, time never slowed down. Not even a little bit. 😫 This means Halley was just a toddler back then and now winding down the days of her senior year at Topsail.
We stayed close to home for her and spent the afternoon in Surf City, specifically near the park and beach. Little did I know there was a music festival happening right there, and none other than the Beach Boys were about to perform. Let me tell you, yes they still draw a huge crowd. Parking was nearly nonexistent, people were everywhere (photoshopped them all out), it was as chaotic as little Surf City can get. Halley kept it cool, focused on the task at hand, not bothered by everything else happening all around her, which really isn’t easy during portraits. There were so many overcast and gloomy days leading up to and even after her session, I desperately wanted a sun filled few hours for Halley’s pics and I’m so happy it showed up in full force for her. Made an enormous difference, always does.
This is a true ECU family and she’ll proudly be a Pirate in August. Congratulations and best of luck at East Carolina!
