It’s the little moments that stay with me.

The way you two look at each each other when no one else is watching. The quiet embraces, the gentle touches, the laughter, and those moments when the rest of the world disappears.

These are some of my favorite intimate moments from a San Juan mountains elopement.

As a landscape photographer, I love the grand mountain landscapes, but as an Elopement? photographer, these quiet, unscripted moments between two people are some of the most beautiful ones.

Because sometimes the most beautiful part of an elopement isn’t the scenery, it’s the connection between the two of you.

The biggest mistake couples make when planning a mountain elopement is trying to fit everything into one day.

I get it! The San Juan mountains are incredible and you want to experience as much of them as possible

But between the winding, bumpy mountain roads, changing weather, elevation, and travel time is easy to spend more of your wedding day rushing between locations, than actually enjoying them.

And believe me, I’ve done it. And when you spend more of your day in the car, than wandering around these beautiful mountain Meadows, you will kick yourself for it.

You don’t need to see every mountain pass visit every Alpine lake or stop at every scenic overlook to have an incredible Elopement day. Choose a few places that really speak to you, allow enough time to explore them and don’t schedule every minute of your day.

Your wedding day isn’t a checklist. It’s the first day of your life together. Make sure you have time to enjoy it all.

Dreaming of a San Juan mountains elopement in Colorado?

Before you start booking anything, here are five things to think about.

1. Will you fly or drive?
The San Juan mountains are remote! Flying into Montrose, Durango, or Telluride can make sense, but driving gives you more flexibility, especially if you’re bringing your dog, wedding attire, or lots of gear

2. Which mountain town feels like you?
Ouray, Telluride, Silverton, and Ridgway all offer something different. From dramatic Mountain peaks and Alpine Lakes to quiet Meadows and waterfalls, your choice of town will help shape your entire elopement experience.

3. Who is coming with you?
Is it just going be the two of you? Your dog? A handful of your favorite people? Your guest count can determine which locations will work best for your ceremony.

4. What season are you dreaming of?
Summer brings wildflowers and green Alpine Meadows. Fall means golden aspens. Winter offers snowy mountain magic, while spring can be unpredictable. Each season has its own beauty and limitations.

5. how much privacy do you want?
This is a big one! Some of the most iconic locations are also the busiest. If you want to exchange your vows without an audience, choosing the right location, day of the week and time of day makes all the difference.

I’m Betsy, a local Colorado elopement photographer, and I’ve spent years photographing and exploring the San Juan mountains around Ouray, Telluride, Silverton, and Ridgway.

I know the roads, I know how quickly the weather can change. I know which locations are busy and where you can find a little more privacy. I know where the light falls at different times of day, and I know when we need a Plan B.

There’s something that changes when you say your vows without an audience. You don’t have to think about how your words will sound to a room full of people. You don’t have to perform or worry about anyone else’s reaction.

It’s just you, the person you’re choosing, and a quiet place in the mountains.

Your vows can be messy. You can laugh halfway through them or you can cry. You can say the things that might feel too personal to say in front of 100 other people.

And I think there is something incredibly beautiful about that. An elopement in the San Juan mountains gives you the space to slow down and let the moment be exactly what it is.

Getting a marriage license in Colorado is surprisingly simple for your Colorado elopement!

The first thing you’ll need to do is go to your county clerks office with your photo IDs. They will have you fill out paperwork and then you’ll get your license. It’s just that simple.

Once you have your license, you can use it that very same day! There is not a waiting period which means you can get your license in the morning and say your vows in the afternoon. You don’t even need an officiant in Colorado! The license is valid statewide which means you can get the license in Denver and still elope in the San Juan mountains if you’d like to.

The license will cost you $30 and you must return it to the same county clerks office that you picked it up in. Many county clerks have drop boxes or you can mail the license back in.

As a Colorado elopement photographer, I help my couples with all the logistics of an elopement day, such as getting your marriage license. I provide my couples with a list of county clerks offices, near where they are going to elope, I help them with recommendations for vendors, for lodging, for restaurants. I help them plan quite, no rush elopement days, and I help them find gorgeous locations for their vows.
