Just keep it simple…

It’s been a rough winter. Lost our cat, awful snowfall totals, terrible mountain conditions, hernia surgery, and now a shoulder injury— I’ve been over this winter since before it began.

As a result of *gestures vaguely* all that, I chose to put the photography business in the back seat in order to focus on keeping my physical and mental health in order. I’m definitely still working on that, but as another winter season comes to an end it’s time to get back on the saddle and get working on all my new ideas for this summer.

Similar to getting back into the gym after a long hiatus, it can be hard to get the artistic train rolling again with such a massive backlog of cool shots from the past few years. I decided to get out and shoot something simple as we started getting snow for the first time in over a month. This poor little pasque flower getting coated in snow after thinking it was safe to bloom during this early spring seemed like a great metaphor for how I feel right now…

Can I bloom yet?

A warm Winter Solstice in Telluride

I’ve been getting a bit frustrated at all the amazing sunrises and sunsets we’ve been getting the past couple weeks because of the severe lack of snow on the ground to round out a nice picture. Gator don’t play no brown grass and poopy dirt foregrounds!

However I had a dear friend reach out about commissioning a specific composition he wants printed, so I figured what better way to enjoy the solstice than to go out and test out some Orion glamor shots over the resort! It was definitely the inspirational push I needed and now I have so many ideas for compositions and time lapses once the snow finally returns 😁

Just got back home to Colorado after a quick little 48 hour trip to the Midwest to shoot another run.

I seriously can’t get enough of these guys; their music is like the puzzle piece that was designed to fit perfectly in my auditory cortex. No one makes me dance and smile so hard that my body and face are sore leaving the show.

I am forever grateful for all the new friends I’ve made, places I’ve visited, and opportunities to progress my photography career over the past 8 years of seeing this band. Almost nothing in this world makes me happier than being lost deep in an untzy groove and looking around to see all my friends, new and old, getting tf down with the biggest smiles on their faces. In these fleeting moments all the troubles in my head and the world around me completely melt away. These are the moments I live for. 🫠

Do me a favor: if you ever see Spafford playing in your neck of the woods, GO SEE THEM FOR ME!!! (and maybe invite me if I wasn’t the one to bring it to your attention in the first place.)

Some views from the coolest backpacking trip I’ve ever been on during our honeymoon last spring.

After 11 miles of hiking through the downpouring rain on muddy cliffs hundreds of feet above the ocean, the weather finally let up as we reached our destination. Due to the extremely sketchy conditions on the trail we only encountered one or two other groups on the beach until things dried out about a day and a half later.

Can’t wait to do this one over again!

1) Approaching the beach we’d be camping on for 3 nights.
2) The awesome swimming hole we found on our day hike the next day.
3)The critically endangered Hawaiian monk seal that was lounging by our campsite as we were setting up camp.
4) Looking back at our campsite under the banyan tree from the beach.

The endangered Haleakalā Silversword.

Argyroxiphium sandwicense subsp. macrophalum, better known as the Haleakalā Silversword, is a plant endemic to the dormant Haleakalā volcano. The Silversword plant species are found in high elevation growing on volcanic cinder only on the islands of Hawai’i and Maui.

These plant populations faced direct damage from humans and ungulate browsing in the early 1900s, but through significant conservation efforts have seen a solid rebound. The critically endangered Mayan Kea silversword population got as low as 50 naturally occurring individuals was recovered to 500 individuals as of 1999.

The silversword is monocarpic, meaning it has one flowering life cycle that ends in the death of the plant. Most silversword grow for at least 5 years before initiating the bolting process, but some species may grow for up to 90 years before flowering! Unfortunately we didn’t see any flowering on our visit to Haleakalā National Park in the spring of 2024, but it was still magical seeing the condensation from the cloud inversions settling on the trichrome covered leaves.

Nocturnal Tones

Finally digging in to the photos I took during our month long trip through the Pacific Northwest last fall. This was from one of our final nights on the Oregon coast before turning back east to head home. I had a blast playing around with shooting the moon above the cloud inversion happening over the ocean while waiting for the Milky Way to come out.

Twilight Over Twilight

This one was a bonus shot of Twilight Peak from the aforementioned Turret & Pigeon trek in the Weminuche Wilderness last year over Labor Day weekend. We stayed at this lake on our last night before catching the train back to Durango and this reflection seemed too good to pass up for sunrise the next morning!

Thought I’d share a lil family adventure portrait for this Friday.

Last weekends my parents and their dog Auggie came out to visit us for their first time during the heart of the summer. Eric and I had a blast taking them around soaking in the views on all the fun summer adventures they’ve never got to do.

Of course I had to try my hand at a little family portrait from one of my favorite views on the ski mountain during the last night of their visit. A night under the stars at the yurt, a beautiful sunset hike with the parents, and some delicious backcountry cooking from my amazing husband .thor.en

Turret & Pigeon ❤️

Thought I’d share another one of my favorite vantage point of the peaks I shared 2 days ago. This one was from a backpacking trip me and my husband took to get away from the chaos a week before our wedding back in 2023. Not only did we get a peaceful disconnect from the pre-wedding chaos, but the fishing was great and I got the best sunset conditions yet from my many trips to this lake!

First Light on Pigeon Peak

I’ve been having too much fun playing with a lot of the panoramas I’ve captured over the past couple years. Unfortunately Instagram is a terrible medium for sharing these ultra-wide, high definition shot, but oh well… I’m gonna do it anyway.

Almost a year ago to the date I went on a backpacking trip into the Weminuche Wilderness with .k.klein and my husband Eric. Our main mission was to summit the infamous Turret & Pigeon Peaks that we had spent plenty of time photographing from afar over the past 5 years.

Over the course of a couple days we made our way into the remote basin at their base and made the plan to summit Turret before sunrise to see what we could see! With a nice alpine start we made our way to the top with plenty of time to spare. Unfortunately there wasn’t a cloud in the sky that morning to catch any of the awesome light, but this meant that summiting Pigeon later that day was definitely a go!

With no clouds to focus my attention, I couldn’t resist trying to get a big sweeping panorama of all the Needles from this 13,816ft peak that lies smack-dab in the middle of the Weminuche. After we were happy with our shots we headed back down to the saddle and wrapped around to climb the much more challenging Pigeon Peak (13,934ft) seen on the left of the shot. With such excellent conditions we spent a good amount of time up there just soaking in the views. (5th Slide)
