In typical Khariza fashion (lol) with one more day left of October, I wanted be sure to pay homage to Filipino American History Month by highlighting a local Filipina owned Bay Area small business Pamana Plantas 🪴🇵🇭 located in Berkeley 🌱

My good friend Lyra Kimura helped plan this beautiful “Kamayan Tea Party” along with Dom, the founder of Pamana Plantas 🪴🇵🇭 as a way to highlight the community, honor the kultura, and simply as a way for this group of people to reconnect and enjoy each other’s company along with delicious treats and tea. 🫖

I love this quote from Dom that I found on her site: “Everything we offer is an invitation: to slow down, to reconnect, and to remember that how we tend to the earth is a reflection of how we tend to ourselves and one another.” ✨

When Alyssa and Ben told me their proposal story, I couldn’t help but smile. They took a birthday road trip to SoCal, driving through Big Sur and stopped at a beach along Highway 1. They came across a cove with a skylight, which adorably reminded Alyssa of The Little Mermaid. After the proposal happened, they said she got the zoomies afterwards haha. As a human who zoomies herself when excited, I loved to hear this was how she expressed her joy!

For the latter part of their engagement session, we watched the sun set at Ocean Beach as they had a dance party while listening to a playlist of their favorite songs. The wind was intense, but that didn’t stop them from enjoying themselves. Ben brought along his Yashica Twin Lens Reflex camera and took some photos of his bride to be as she made time for zoomies as well haha. One of my favorite moments was when they were visited by a friendly dog who just wanted some pets. 🥰

Today is their wedding day at Hacienda de las Flores by Wedgewood Weddings and I can’t wait!! 🙌🏼

My good friend Kristina Le and her fiancé Rian are getting married tomorrow (!!!) In the Spring I had the honor of capturing engagement photos for them at the gorgeous Marin County Civic Center.

And yeah I know this place has been popping off lately, but honestly I can see why. This mid-century modern architectural masterpiece was designed by the great Frank Lloyd Wright. I remember learning about his work years ago in my college architectural history class, so it was definitely special to experience in person!

The leading lines, and presence of nature inside the building made it so much fun to photograph. It also helps when you have a beautiful couple as your subject 😍 I just loved how her red ao dai popped so well!

Extra excited for tomorrow, as I have the privilege of attending as a guest 🕺🪩 Can’t wait to celebrate with you K + R! ✨

POV: when you’re a wedding photographer invited to a wedding as a guest

My friend Angela and her hubs Trevor hit their first wedding anniversary and I can’t believe it’s already been a year since their lovely celebration!

It’s always special to get to attend a wedding as a guest, but it’s definitely hard to turn off the photographer brain sometimes haha.

As I’m getting excited to document another celebration on a boat along the Bay, I wanted to share some favorites from the first wedding I shot on the Hornblower last year 🛥️

Jess + Paul’s wedding was so beautiful and quintessentially SF with Karl the Fog present and even a bit of rain that showed up during their vows.

They were married by the captain of the boat and even incorporated a handfasting ceremony, which comes from a Celtic tradition where the couple’s hands are bound together with a rope to signify their shared future together. It’s also where the term “tying the knot” originated from.

During their engagement session, I told Katherine + Jake to pretend I wasn’t there, to enjoy one another’s presence, and to frolic (yes frolic!) in the sand.

And let me tell you, no words can express how much they understood the assignment–I’ll let these images speak for themselves 😍

Sometimes Instagram just makes us feel like it’s only about posting pretty photos.

As a wedding photographer, what I feel is even more important is the story tied to the images we create.

The 6 years it took for M+M to get to this point. The long distance relationship, living in different countries and time zones.

These photos represent more than just pretty photos. It signifies the beginning of their next chapter. The start of their lives finally living together, and in the same country and time zone.

These photos will be a reminder of everything they overcame and achieved to get to where they are now.

We fit into each other’s lives like two perfect puzzle pieces, we are alike and different in all the right ways and have a sense of ease and calm between each other.

This is what Cassie + Drew told me when I asked how their friends would describe them as a couple.

During their engagement session, I could immediately see what they meant and how well they complemented one another.

Their go-to date night is dinner and a show, usually in the North Beach area, which is so fitting since we walked around North Beach for their session. They also happened to be heading to a concert that evening, and funnily enough, I was headed to the same concert!

For those who are curious, the concert was Doechii at the Bill Graham and she was amazing of course.

Cassie + Drew tie the knot today and I couldn’t be more excited to document their joyful garden wedding at the Outdoor Art Club 🌳

My favorite types of engagement sessions are the kinds where I am basically invited as a third wheel to one of your dates. That’s what Jess + Mav envisioned for their session with me and it was so much fun. They told me that as a couple, they love a cozy walk paired with a fun cocktail or delicious ice cream treat, and they opted for the latter. We got some ice cream at Salt & Straw and then walked around downtown Burlingame, followed by a nearby park, as they spent a lot of early dates in this area. Mav brought along his Fujifilm and he and Jess even snapped pictures of one another, since Mav said he’s usually the one behind the camera taking pictures of Jess haha.

Why are these my favorite? The emotional connection they had to that area made the session that much more special and they felt more at ease. Especially since they were just doing things they normally would do, but in front of a camera. It was so cool seeing them recall the memories of their dates together while preparing for their future together. We love a full-circle moment 😍

Today they’re getting married at Mavericks House - And how perfect is it that the groom’s name is in fact Maverick?! It was definitely meant to be!

Lola Luz 🕊️

Zambales is a beautiful coastal province in central Luzon where my Lola Luz raised her family. It’s where my mom grew up, and where my sister and I were born. It was bittersweet to return to my mom’s hometown under such sad circumstances, but I’m grateful my mom, sisters and I made the trip back together. How special it was to celebrate her life surrounded by family, and to spend more time in the part of the Philippines I’ll always be connected to 🤎

The first photo was taken in 2015.
The rest of the photos were taken a few weeks ago.
