Mag Mask Woman is going to Barcelona .
Hey friends ! An image from a series I’m working on was awarded an honorable mention in the self portrait category of the 14th Julia Margaret Cameron Award Exhibition. Juried by Elizabeth Avedon, Rebecca Robertson and Analy Werbin. An invitation with whereabouts in comments if you happen to be in Spain !
The opening is on March 4 .
This work is about women and our connection/ identification with the natural world.
From my writings on the series :
or , just go with the visuals ( :
“From a series of self portraits based in science, art and where the two fields converge in analogy. A cognitive system through which we experience the poetry of rocks, or personhood. Or the parallels between the life cycle of a tree and our own. Speaking to the power of empathy in relation to sustainability and conservation. I began this series after witnessing the life cycle of a magnolia grandiflora through the seasons, in my friend Avis’s backyard. She grew it from a seed to a magnificent towering shelter for birds, photosynthesis, flowers and other wonders. This event coinciding with the election of Donald Trump and the acceptance of “alternative facts “for truths. Ushering in new levels of climate and science denial alongside the administrations never ending human rights violations. The mag mask woman speaks the language of a life spanning millions of years. An ancestral flower predating bees, pollinated by beetles and marking perhaps the beginning of the mysterious evolutionary origin of flowers on earth.Through a biophilic lens, I set out to make a picture in the image of mystery, longevity and the science behind them. Reflecting on the stunning range of what human beings are capable of, the mag mask woman lives on in a metaphorical orchard, writing herstory.”
