Do you guys like panoramic photos? How about Zion National Park? The moon? This is the Hunter's Moon rising over Zion, last week. And just like that, winter is here. I had my first working day of the winter season, yesterday. Alta asked me to come up and take "snowliage" photos—that's when fall foliage and snow collide. I wasn't sure what to expect but it was wonderful. There were still lots of golden leaves on the aspens and everything was snowy. I just got back from making gravel bike photos for White Pine County Tourism & Recreation in Ely, Nevada. While I was there I got to check out a new IMBA-built trail that starts up at 9000 feet, near the top of Ward Mountain. I am so excited about this trail. I first rode in Ely over ten years ago and the trails and mountain bike community have come so far. This new trail is amazing and takes advantage of the big mountain terrain the area has to offer. I say this pretty regularly but if you haven't ridden Ely, put it on your list. It's a really cool high-desert mountain town and the trails are top notch.

I've seen Colorado columbines (white and lavender) and Utah columbines (usually all white - it's Utah), but this summer was the first time I think I've seen a pink and yellow columbine wildflower. I found this one in a high canyon on the Montana/Idaho border. Does anyone know if this is a common columbine color in Montana?

Devil's Castle Sunset: I made this last week up at Alta during a cloudy evening hike. This was a really nice surprise because it was so cloudy I didn't think I was going to get any photos. However, right at sunset the sky over the Castle started to open up and the light came through. I have a lot of great Devil's Castle photos but I think this is one of my favorites. For now, anyway...

I visited Chaco Canyon once and I don't think it's hyperbole to say it was a spiritual experience. You can feel the spirits of the people who used to live there. And the Pueblo people of New Mexico and the Four Corners region believe it is the resting place of their ancestors. Unfortunately, the BLM is about to remove all protection for this beautiful and sacred place. What a tragic loss that will be. Trading history and culture for the short-term financial gain of mineral extraction is sad and immoral. There is something you can do, though. Go to the BLM "Evaluation of Potential Revocation of Chaco Withdrawal" webpage and leave a comment about why you are against removing protections for Chaco Canyon.
