Nobody actually likes being told to smile.

I was teaching a posing class in the McKenna booth at ShutterFest, and we were talking about hands.

But the real lesson wasn’t about hands at all.

The pose got her in position.
The prompt helped with the smile.

When photographers get stuck, they usually think they need a better pose. Most of the time, they need a better conversation.

Less posing. More connection.
Less directing. More prompting.

That’s where the magic happens.

That did NOT go how i expected.

It went even better!!!

This millennial photographer asked my seniors to recreate the iconic High School Musical jump… and then realized Gen Z doesn’t know the reference anymore.
Honestly though? They made it even better.

These 4 seniors earned me a spot as a Top 25 Boss Photographer for Senior Inspire 2026. 3 from Minnesota, 1 from Utah. Thank you Hannah, Tabitha, Taryn and Deanna and your senior pictures are fire! It was a joy working with all 4 of you!

Creative senior photography will always be my favorite art form — blending personality, movement, lighting, and emotion into senior pictures.

I built 5 cinematic lighting setups for my ShutterFest class, and this was a fun one from the rotation. Bronx did such a great job modeling for all the photographers!
