Help me wish this little angel baby the happiest 1st birthday 🎂

The first birthday heirloom portrait is my most popular portrait session for good reason. I love to imagine a 4 or 5 panel frame with an heirloom portrait from each of their first 4/5 years. All put together in the same format and editing style. Framed and ready to pass down. A perfect representation of how much changes in those early years while remaining timeless and simple.

One of my biggest hesitations about including professional hair and makeup in my sessions was that I never wanted my clients to look too “glam.”

I hardly ever wear makeup myself (unless I’m going somewhere special), and I really believe that when you look back at your photographs 30 years from now, you should look like YOU.

Not like you’re headed to a black tie event when really, we’re just hanging out in your living room with your two week old baby.

And then I found 𝓚𝓻𝓲𝓼𝓽𝓪 𝓜𝓪𝓼𝓼𝓮𝔂 💕 𝓜𝓪𝓴𝓮𝓾𝓹/𝓗𝓪𝓲𝓻 𝓐𝓻𝓽𝓲𝓼𝓽

She has this incredible ability to make women look like themselves, just a little more rested and polished. Her makeup is soft and natural, and the hair is whatever feels most like you. Sometimes it’s loose curls, sometimes it’s straight, sometimes it’s a braid.

But here’s what I’ve realized. It was never really about the makeup.

It’s about having someone take care of YOU.

Especially during a season when you’re spending every waking moment taking care of someone else.

I bring the wardrobe (and my camera and charm, obviously 😉), and Krista brings the beauty. And maybe more importantly, the confidence.

Because you deserve to feel beautiful in these photographs, too.

And can we PLEASE talk about how stunning this mama looks just TWO WEEKS postpartum?! 🤍

When I say you don’t need to come to your newborn session with a plan, I really mean it.

For this session, I chose every piece the family wore from my client wardrobe and had everything steamed and waiting for them when they arrived. They didn’t have to shop, coordinate outfits, or wonder what would photograph well. They just had to show up with their babies.

And from there, we created all of this.

The whole family. Each parent with their new baby. Sisters together. Tiny details. Quiet moments. A few looking at the camera and plenty where no one is. Baby awake, baby asleep. Color and black and white. The images you expect from a newborn session and so many you probably didn’t know to ask for.

I think that’s such an important part of hiring a photographer whose work you trust. You shouldn’t have to arrive with a Pinterest board or a list of poses to make sure we get everything.

Let me think about all of that.

You’re in a season where you already have enough to think about.

Just show up. I’ve got the rest.

Five newborn sessions.

I met this family when we photographed maternity portraits before their first baby was born. And somehow, here we are, five babies later.

They’ve been with me through just about every version of this business. The shoot and burn days. Mini sessions. Opening my first studio. And now, a completely different experience where we’re not just taking pictures, but thinking about where they’ll live and how their kids will someday look back at them.

When you photograph a family for this long, you really know them.

I know Mom’s preferences without having to ask. I know what will make Dad laugh. I know which kid will need a little extra time, which one will give me exactly three seconds before they’re done, and which little quirks I want to make sure we don’t forget.

There’s a comfort that comes with that history. They trust me, and I know them. And I don’t take that lightly.

Recently, I got to help them design a gallery for their stairwell using photographs from all of these years together. Babies who aren’t babies anymore. Different seasons of their family. Different seasons of my work, too.

And now we get to add one more baby to it.

This is probably the part of being a family photographer I love the most. Not just getting to photograph your family once, but getting to know you well enough that, years later, these photographs start to tell one long story.

Maybe that’s the ache of motherhood: wanting them to grow while wishing you could keep every version of them.

A little reminder for the moms of big kids: you’re not done documenting them yet.

I know family photos can feel a little different once your kids are older.

They have opinions. They might not be thrilled about the idea. Someone will probably tell you they hate pictures. And getting everyone dressed and in the same place at the same time somehow feels harder than it did when they were toddlers.

But this season deserves to be remembered, too.

And I promise, I don’t need your teenager to show up excited about family photos. 😂

I’ll give them something to do. I’ll keep it moving. I’ll let them be themselves. And somewhere in between the eye rolls and the “are we done yet?” I’ll get this.

The real smiles. The sibling dynamic. The way they laugh together. The version of your family that exists right now.

Because one day, you’re going to miss this version of them just as much as you miss the little one.

This is my ‘maternity muse.’ We played together in my studio to document this magical season. A sweet baby girl on the way.

Portraits like these ask for a little more. A little vulnerability. A willingness to try something that might feel different. To trust the light, the direction, the vision… and me behind the camera.

And I really believe that trust is what makes images like these possible.

Connor is always willing to create art with me, and every time she steps in front of my camera, we make something that feels completely her. Intimate, feminine, and worthy of remembering.

In fact, every single piece here is from my studio wardrobe and she walked in and said ‘just tell me what to wear and Im in!’

There is something so beautiful about documenting motherhood this way. 🤍
