🐦 Skyward Perch

A Flash of Red

Still in the Shallows

Grasshopper On Buds

Well walking with camera just turned into driving with camera. Driving down forestdale rd, I turned to my left and I saw a turkey vulture on a flag pole and another on the chimney so I came to a screeching hault . Just as they started to take off and I was able to take this picture.

Squirrel With Two Acorns

The Heron That Got Away

Have you ever lined up a photo just as your subject decided to leave? I was walking the blacktop path back to my truck when I spotted a great blue heron perched in a tree. My son and daughter were arguing nearby, and I had a feeling my wife was glad they were outside instead of playing video games. I raised my camera, the heron heard the commotion, and off it flew.

It headed toward the beaver dam, where a group was photographing tree frogs. Then I heard someone call out, “Wow, a heron!” I had to laugh. A moment earlier, I was hoping that would be my shot.

Great blue herons trail their long legs behind them in flight.

I guess that heron had other flight plans.

Heron Preening Sequence

A great blue heron perches, settles into a portrait, turns its head back to preen, and then stretches upward with small feathers drifting around it. Which pose best shows the surprising range of this long-legged bird?

It was clearly having a feather-ruffling day, but it handled it with great plumage.
