From last spring, The Chase! Obsidian and her triplets were grazing on this hillside when Grizzly 970, a large boar also known as Van Gogh for his missing ear, picked up her scent and began to pursue her. This put the cubs at great risk because in order to mate with her, he would kill the cubs. This mama bear quickly sent her cubs to the trees and bravely got him to chase her in the opposite direction. At one point, you can see him head toward the trees and she wisely cuts him off and gets him to chase her again. This tense scene ended when they disappeared over the hill and we didn’t find out until the following day that she had successfully protected her cubs. In fact, she kept them for the rest of the summer and didn’t release them until early fall. This spring, Obsidian and 970 were seen hanging out together under much less stressful circumstances. Maybe we’ll see brand new cubs next year?!

We spent the last two weekends selling art through the Inspired By Yellowstone Artist series. It was wonderful meeting hundreds of people from all over the world. My photos are headed to Australia, China, Holland, Canada, India, Japan, and all across the US. It’s so cool to see a common love of art and nature. We were able to catch up with several friends that we haven’t seen in a while and make new friends. Thanks everyone sharing your stories and all the support. ⭐️

Grizzly 970, known as Van Gogh for his missing ear, and Grizzly 815 better known as Obsidian, have been hanging out this spring. What a stark contrast to last spring when Obsidian had her triplet cubs that she had to protect. One year ago tomorrow, Obsidian and her cubs were grazing in a field, when Van Gogh picked up her scent and tracked them down. This was extremely dangerous for the cubs as he may kill them in order to mate with her, so mom sent them into the trees and courageously got him to chase her instead. Great job, mama! She successfully raised all three cubs, released them last fall, and is having a much less stressful spring this year.

This female bighorn sheep seemed completely fascinated with my camera. While the rest of the herd kept their distance and went about their day, she kept walking right up to me, curious and bold. There’s always one in the group with a little extra personality.

A small, respectful gallery of people had gathered to watch this bear graze and enjoy the afternoon from a safe distance. When the bear ventured too close to the road and people, park rangers did a great job announcing to the crowd that they were going haze it back to safety. This is Obsidian’s subadult, and it’s important that it not become too comfortable around people and busy roadways. In this slow motion video, you can enjoy watching its athleticism…halfway through it really gets moving!

This beauty (Grizzly 610) brought out her two new cubs over the weekend. She’s a great mom, just like her mom (Grizzly 399).
