How did you find your purpose?

Maybe you looked up to someone in your family or a mentor. My purpose came through the combination of the loss of my sister, Kristina, and volunteering for .

Now that I know that recording people's life stories is my specific purpose, I have had the opportunity to speak about it on podcasts, at summits, on stages, and in articles. Writing a chapter in the anthology "LeadHERship: Women Leading with Purpose" motivated me to complete my own book, which will be published next year.

Thank you to Bold Journey for featuring me in this article entitled "How Did You Find Your Purpose?" It was a little different. They asked some questions that I haven't answered before. Read it here: https://boldjourney.com/meet-zoe-martin

Good people who do good by helping others are my kind of people.

Dana Riley, Donor Relations Manager at The Samaritan Inn, spoke to the Empower McKinney networking group today. She started with a question: When you think of someone as homeless, what does that look like to you?

The reality is that homelessness sometimes looks different than we think it does. It could be a single person, a parent with children, a relative, such as an aunt, uncle, or even grandparents with children.

I learned some things that I didn't know about how The Samaritan Inn serves the community. I'm glad that I was able to attend. I'll put a link in the comments if you'd like to learn more about them. They just broke ground on their pet shelter. Oh! They are hosting a Pickleball Tournament next weekend, too. See the last photo for details. (You were missed and Happy Birthday, Tonya Wi******er.)

Jared Tye and Bruce Quernemoen, the Empower McKinney group is a little different kind of networking. I can see it gaining popularity.

Shot down over the Demilitarized Zone in April 1972, Air Force Capt. William Henderson became one of the many names carried on the MIA lists of the Vietnam War.

The rest of the story was something Hollywood decided needed to be told. An article in the Milwaukee Journal by Anne E. Schwartz entitled, "Hero gets to see self portrayed in film" states, "It is unlikely that anyone in the Southtown movie theater in West Allis took a second glance at Bill and Colleen Henderson as they sat and watched 'Bat-21' last week. They might have taken notice had they known that Henderson was one of the real-life pilots being portrayed on the screen by actor Danny Glover."

This book is a compilation of newspaper articles and memorabilia that the Henderson family had accumulated over Captain Henderson's lifetime.

His daughter, Tracy, and I had never met before today, though we had talked several times over the phone and online to create this documented history for her dad's Celebration of Life. Meeting her was like reconnecting with an old friend.

There is an overwhelming sense of honor for me to help other people share their stories so they can pass them on to future heirs. My sister Kristina's legacy continues through my work.

You may not see this book option on my website yet, but you will. Now that you're thinking about it, what memorabilia would you like to have documented to ensure future generations know someone's story?

Before you donate summer clothes at a corner drop off location in Dallas*, consider donating them to Streetside Showers instead.

You can drop them off at partner businesses or at the Streetside Showers locations, where you can also meet the people who are making a difference. I'll put the link in the comments.

While most used items will make the cut, part of their shower service includes providing guests with fresh, clean underwear.

Men's boxer briefs are their biggest need.

They collect new men's boxer briefs in all sizes (medium and large are our most common sizes) and women's cotton bikinis in all sizes. They also accept new ankle and crew socks for men.

Lance Olinski, you saw a need and have been filling it for nearly ten years. You are the kind of person leaving a lasting legacy. It was very nice to meet you this morning.

Our family of five lived in a hotel for a week with three turtles and an adult Husky.

I'm not even kidding.

When the host of The McKinney Podcast, Fred Mahusay, asked what brought us to McKinney, I explained that we were on a time crunch because our previous home in Longview had already sold. We moved here sight unseen. We had never even visited McKinney.

After a day of touring properties in and around Little Elm, I literally got sick. The properties we saw near Plano were disappointing. The pandemic made for slim pickings in real estate. I was worried that we weren't going to find a place to move into in time.

Partly because, when we moved into our house in Longview, we had to wait a week for things to be finalized before we could get the keys. Our belongings were stuck in a moving truck, while my husband and I, our three teenagers, their three pet turtles and Husky, were all crammed into a hotel room. What a crazy memory.

We moved into our house in McKinney based on pictures we saw online. It wound up being a great neighborhood off Custer and Virginia, and we really like McKinney.

You'll hear more about that and other things when you listen to this episode of The McKinney Podcast. Thank you again, Fred, for inviting me to be a guest. Link in comments.

Energized after the meeting with Edge Professionals this morning.

It is not a large group, but it is an intentional one, which makes it worth its weight in gold.

The conversations were sincere. We want to build a community that genuinely cares for the well being of those we serve.

What is the goal of the community you are part of?

I found it!

A few days ago, I posted about the shadow box that holds my Grandma Barrera's pink mantilla. I have been trying to locate a photograph of her that I could see in my mind's eye, but I had been unable to find, until today.

Thanks to a little research, our family will now have the recording that the Voces Oral History Center at UT Austin made with our Grandma.

Today, I feel accomplished. I hope that you will dig into something you've been trying to discover. What is it? Maybe I can point you in the right direction.

Who are synergy partners for your business?

helped me discover that wills and trust attorneys, wealth and financial advisors, and retirement and succession planners are some of the best referral connections for me. Since pivoting my business to document legacy, the broader those connections have become.

For example, founded a company called . They're a secure digital vault where you can store essential documents, photos, and memories. Because secure storage is something I heavily encourage, it makes sense that I would partner with him to refer people his way.

Today, I attended a luncheon he hosted at The Meeting Place where I met , , , , and . If you don't know about yet, it is a convenient location off 635 that opens the doors to local authors, entrepreneurs, and more. It was nice to recognize a couple of faces in the room, though I didn't get to catch up with you, 'AndreAllegra and .

Starting the conversation about securing important information should be something we talk about early and often. What do you think?

Tell me about something valuable you have inherited.

Grandma Barrera was one of the strongest, hardest-working women I have ever known. I admire her more now than I did when I was younger. Children see the world through different eyes than adults do.

Grandma was in her seventies when we had a brief conversation where she mentioned that she had always wanted a pink mantilla. I wish I could remember more of that story. Though she didn't ask for one then, I made a mental note to find one for her.

Mantillas are not something commonly worn in the US. Even in Mexico, they were not worn daily. I had no idea if she would wear it or when. That was not the point. The point was that she wanted one and I was going to get it for her.

I ordered a white lace floral mantilla and dyed it pink. We lived in different states at the time. I wanted to see the look on her face when she opened it, so I boxed it, wrapped it, and took it to her on our next visit. The anticipation was palpable. The time to get it in her hands could not come soon enough.

As she stood in her living room unwrapping the box, she was surprised by what she saw. I don't think she remembered telling me that she wanted a pink mantilla. The smile on her face filled my heart.

Though I never saw her wear it out, I was elated to be the person who had gifted it to her.

When she passed, the podium was draped in the pink mantilla where the eulogy was read. Family members who shared memories of Grandma stood behind it, reminiscing about her amazing cooking and baking skills. My brother comically deduced that the secret must have been in the Avon products she used on her hands for so many years.

The mantilla was given to me after the service. It is a treasured keepsake that sits in this shadow box on my wall. When I find just the right one, I am going to add a black and white portrait of her to the bottom right corner.

That is one story of one item I cherish. What about you? What is something that you've inherited that you have a story about?
