I’ve photographed thousands of love stories. This one was my son’s. ❤️
And truthfully… I could barely photograph it.
On July 11th in Italy, our son Kenneth asked the love of his life, Ashley, to marry him.
And she said YES. 💍🇮🇹
For more than 40 years, I’ve stood behind a camera for some of the most emotional moments in people’s lives. I’ve photographed proposals, first looks, fathers seeing their daughters as brides, vows, tears, laughter and thousands of “I do’s.”
I always thought I knew how to stay composed behind the camera.
Not this time.
As I watched my son get down on one knee, I was crying so much that I could barely see through the viewfinder. My hands were shaking, my throat was closing up, and at times I honestly struggled just to keep the camera focused.
Because in that moment, I wasn’t a photographer.
I was just Dad.
Kenneth and Ashley are not only an incredible couple, they’re also such an important part of the Patken Photographer family — working alongside us as photographer and videographer, spending their lives capturing other couples’ love stories.
And now, finally, we get to tell theirs.

Listening to his voice while watching these moments back absolutely gets me every time.
