I'm still such a "youngster" at taking photographs in the Flint Hills.☺️ Craig and I made this trip on July 4, 2026 through the Skyline Mill Creek Scenic Drive in Wabaunsee County near Alma, KS. We drove through torrential rains, storms and clouds nearly all day (from Wichita to Kansas City). The clouds opened up a bit and a little sun, fog and light poured through so we stopped and here are a few of my Flint Hills landscapes from that day! We'll definitely be back for more.

☀️⛵️Images Art Gallery is hosting their Third Friday Art Walk Open House, Friday, Aug. 21, 2026 from 5 - 8p. Norma Herring and Teri Kay Willett, Featured Artists, will debut their incomparable Iridescent Water Color Exhibit!

Union Pacific – Armour Yellow

The yellow and orange "Armour Yellow" paint scheme commonly associated with Union Pacific equipment, often seen on Heritage Fleet passenger cars, stems from a 1930s redesign meant to evoke speed, luxury, and cleanliness. These cars are part of a fleet preserved by the Union Pacific to honor its history, with many dating back decades.

Topeka Significance: Union Pacific has a long history in Kansas and specifically used a special historical train in 1927 for the opening of the passenger depot in Topeka.

🚙A little detour off our usual route to the family farm a couple of weeks ago, landed us near Jarbalo! I remember friends of my parents owned a country home in Jarbalo. Back then it seemed so far from our house, but, now realize it couldn't have been more than a few miles as there were no direct roads and some of those roads weren't even rocked. I love to discover a beautiful scenic drive and just minutes from the route we usually take to Leavenworth County, Kansas.

🌻A little glimpse of the lush green landscape in rural Leavenworth County, Kansas with the wet spring and start to summer. Our family farm sits right in the Glaciated Region of Kansas. I’ve been reading and enjoying the book “Kansas Landscapes – A Photographic Tour of the Region’s Geological History.” This is a wonderful book written by Keith B. Miller and photography by Scott Bean, Mark Clarke and Mickey Shannon. 🌅

🛤️Don’t let the lush green cover fool you. My dad always talked about the glaciers that once covered this part of the state and the farm he purchased back in the early 1950’s. I remember my fascination at the thought of how this land must have looked at one time. We laugh today, as we pick up rock after rock and move boulder after boulder on this family tract. We boast that our bumper crop each year is “limestone rocks,” as no matter how many you pick up or move, the natural movement of the earth beneath churns up more rocks almost before your eyes!💚😃
