The end of an era. 🥹
Today I photographed what I believe will be my very last NICU session with a little one whose older brother I first photographed in the NICU in the spring of 2013. Serendipitously, it was her brother's smiley photograph that landed on the cover of my 8 page feature in the Kansas City Star 8 months later. Only now, 13 years later, all you get to see of little sister are her cute little toes.
I am still very active in my family portraits, photographing over 500 families every year in my 5 minute mini sessions, make no mistake please. But since the birth of my second child in 2018, it had been becoming increasingly harder to continue offering the complimentary NICU sessions, then COVID happened, and now these days I homeschool full time on top of both kids in a year round competitive sport. From the many years of unexplained infertility which lead me to offer NICU sessions to families in times when life felt so chaotic, to now being blessed in my own very busy motherhood era, it's all come full circle as I retire from the NICU and I am extremely proud of the joy it brought countless families, the quality of the work and raising prematurity awareness to a global level. If you weren't around when it was at its height, after the TODAY SHOW feature on 2014, it went everywhere and what an honor it was to connect with families, non-profit organizations and even clinicians when I gave a presentation to about 100 clinical staff on the value of photography in the NICU at the Gravens Conference in Clearwater, FL in 2015.
Thank you all for your support of these families & their journeys over the years. My NICU work will forever be my magnum opus, it was the honor of my life. Always,
