A little elk velvet shedding action from a couple of weeks ago.
Ahead of the rut, their testosterone spikes, the blood flow stops, and the velvet dries out and starts to fall off.
To the elk it feels itchy, so you’ll often see them thrashing against trees or scrub to remove it.
They will then often eat the nutrient-rich velvet to help replenish what they lost while growing their antlers.
Swipe to the second photo which shows that velvet consumption isn’t strictly constrained to their own.

R7. A truly magnificent moose.
I have been fortunate to photograph this big guy several times, each time is an honour.

It doesn’t matter how much experience or knowledge you have, there are no guarantees when you head into the wild.
Any time the animal you’re searching for is where you hoped they’d be, is a special moment.

Felt that thunder clap in my body. 😅
Always good to have a reminder of the sheer power of Mother Nature.

Face to face with the bull moose known as Longbell.
Every time I’ve photographed this big fella, he’s been calm and curious.
He had been tranquillised and collared the week of this shot but seemed like he’d gotten used to his new jewellery.
Another amazing moment in the wild.

The rut is approaching…
This big bull (on the right in the first picture) had only recently shed his velvet but those spicy behaviours had already begun.
He sparred with the other bulls, hissed and vocalised, and generally walked around like he owned the place. 😂
Definitely one to keep an eye on during the rut.
It won’t be long before the mountains echo with bugles and the clack of antlers crashing into each other.
I unfortunately won’t be around for the rut, I’ll be heading back to England for a few weeks instead.
Can’t wait to see the photos and footage from all the incredible photographers that will be there.

Happy Moose Monday!
An incredible encounter this past Friday alongside Connor Holt and Winslow In The Wild. A fun little story to go with it also.
We were hiking through the back country in search of moose but hadn’t had any luck. Winslow suggested we hike a little deeper before heading back to our trucks.
As Winslow stepped between some trees with Conor and myself right behind, Mama moose stood up out of nowhere, no more than 10 feet in front of us.
We stopped and backed up really slowly. As we did so, you could see Mama visibly relax and she laid back down.
We took the long way round to change our vantage point, then waited, allowing the moose to get used to our presence. Before long both of them were relaxing in the shade.
If you’re ever in the presence of wildlife and they relax that much while aware of your presence, you’re doing it right. The aim when practicing ethical wildlife photography should always be to try and avoid disrupting their natural behaviours. I’d say we nailed it with this situation.
An incredible moment that definitely got the pulses racing.
