I’ve been photographing for about 48 years. I’ve covered a lot of different things including the NBA, college and high school sports, portraits, model photography, along with wildlife, landscapes, waterfalls, and even crime scenes. I have photographed a bird here and there, but not flying… the bird, not me.
Living here in the beautiful Rocky Mountains, I’m blessed with so much natural beauty. I realized that I was not doing what I could to photograph all of the beauty that God has bestowed upon us. That is, photographing birds in flight. For me not to do so, would be squandering the skills that God has bestowed upon me.
Thanks to technology, my new camera and lenses are so precise and fast that they combine to negate any effect that my tremors (a gift likely from my service in the Army - to have served was an honor, nonetheless) may have on shooting.
These days I shoot with a Canon R5 II and primarily use a Canon 100mm - 500mm f/ 4.5 - 7.1 for most of my bird shots. I also have a Canon 24mm - 70mm f/2.8 for landscapes and a Canon 70mm - 200mm f/2.8 that I use for landscape photography and photographing larger animals that might be a little bit closer/slower.
For my upcoming trip to Wyoming and Montana, I will rent a Canon 200 - 800mm lens for grizzly bear photography.
So far I am shooting with auto ISO, f/6.7 - f/8.0, and at 1/2500 - 1/3000 second.
Look around. What are you not shooting? What blessings might you be squandering?
