You don’t need to buy new clothes. You don’t need matching outfits. You don’t need to have a magazine worthy home. You don’t need to clean your house. Truly and honestly all you need to do is show up.

If you want to and you have the bandwidth to coordinate outfits and plan a bit, then do it. I’m all for that. But also I get it if you just can’t. Life is already a lot. Family photos shouldn’t be another stressor. Sometimes we have to give up control and lean in to whatever will unfold. That’s often when the best stuff happens.

So much personality, uniqueness and liveliness comes from the element that your home adds to your photos. There’s so much to love about documenting your family in your space, and character is right up there at the top of the list. ✨

Why?

1. It holds so many memories. It’s the place where you spend the most time. It’s the place you have created to be a reflection of your family. Photos of it are special now, but just think how meaningful they will be in 20, 30, 40 years!

2. It’s easy and relaxed. If you want your photos to look effortless and relaxed, start with an environment that makes you feel that way. Everything you need is there. Your kids have their stuff. Snacks are on hand and nothing has to be packed.

3. Your photos are unique. With your home as the background of your family photos, they instantly become more unique and special. No one else can replicate them, they are your story and yours only.

There’s nothing that I love more than a casual family session at home, where you can just be.

This year I’m really leaning into at-home photos. I find they really light me up and turn up the creative juices. I work best within parameters and something about being in a home just works for me.
