Not just photos OF your newborn, but photos of the way they fit so teensy in your arms, your fresh face, before it’s settled into this new change. You’ll understand when you get there. I promise.

Photography is a luxury but don’t skip out on the six month milestone if you can! The growth from newborn babies to six months is huge, and once they’re mobile it’s a fast track to toddlerhood. If I think about it too much, I’ll cry, so I’ll stop here and leave with you with 20 of my favorites from this six month baby and family session.

I’m not a thrill seeker but I am giddy about photographing proposals. This was one of my most requested locations in Dallas, but I could recreate it anywhere. Here’s how:

1. Location and timing. If it’s a public place, weekdays will be less crowded. If that’s not possible, have a crew of friends in place early to claim your spot. My vote is usually sunset for the romance of it all.

2. Florals. A couple of arrangements go a long way. I’ll send you recommendations if you need them.

3. Have a solid plan in place and confirm it with your team. I have two preferred methods and lay it all out for my clients. Have a spot in mind in the Greater Austin Area? Let me plan it to perfection with you.

A sleepy newborn makes a session run smoothly from pose to pose, giving you variety in your gallery. It takes a non “easy baby” mom to know that not all newborns sleep when we want them to, so here’s some sage advice.

1. They WILL eventually sleep. The session is long for a reason and I’ll wait while your newborn cluster feeds for the third time or otherwise gets their grumpies over with. It will not be the first time I wait on a baby or the last.

2. Feed that baby. Sometimes they’re just hungrier than usual. Let them eat until they’re 100% satisfied and we’ll probably reap the rewards of a milk drunk baby who doesn’t stir when pass them from mom to dad.

3. Make sure they get a good burp in and that any tummy pain is remedied. I’ll show you ways to hold them that help their digestion if you need help.

4.. Swaddle and white noise. It just works. Even if you think your baby doesn’t need it. It’ll speed up the effort and give you more time for more photos.

4. While they’re awake, we’ll lean into it. I’ll get some photos of their eyes open in the meantime and if they have a full belly, no discomfort, the warmth of your arms and are snug in a swaddle, they’ll drift off in the process.

DFW, I’M COMING FOR A VISIT THIS SPRING…2/3 of the way at least. I asked on stories if anyone would be down to meet me in Waxahachie for studio/greenhouse photos and I had some interest. This family and I go way back to 2012. Yes, TWELVE. I was fresh out of college when I photographed their engagement portraits. The next year I photographed their wedding and highlighted their galleries on my website and socials for years. They were some of my very favorite. Down the road I photographed maternity and newborn sessions for their first baby, sprinkled in some family sessions through the years, and was delighted to get one last maternity and newborn combo in last year for baby number four.

This is exactly what I hoped for when I quit my day job to pursue photography full time in 2014. To get invited back again and again for the honor of documenting your growing family.
