In 1982, the Norfolk and Western Railroad bought out much of the ex. Pennsy trackage in south eastern PA from the then young Consolidated Rail Corporation. Wait, that's not quite right. Without a single Norfolk Southern horsehead in sight, these photos bring that fantasy about as close to reality as we are going to get.

This spring, I visited Susquehanna's Delaware River Railroad Excursions for the first time. The scenic riverside excursion service is host to a Chinese SY Class, one of two in the United States. Locomotive 142, built in 1989, is seen in these photos, heading an excursion on a dreary May afternoon.

While shooting Colorado narrow gauge, to encounter an outside frame Mikado is... inevitable. Out of the 45 various narrow gauge Mikados that the Rio Grande rostered, 22 are still around, with many continuing to serve the very purpose for which they were built, pulling trains over the mountains of Colorado. During my latest trip to Colorado, I encountered a small number of these engines in operation on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Featured in these photos is D&RGW K-36 Class no. 480, waiting to depart Durango on the morning of February 1st, 2026. While my friends and myself were waiting to board the train behind Rio Grande Southern 20, I took the opportunity to grab a number of detail photos of the class leader, and these are the results.

On the topic of Railfests and night photo shoots....
For the second year in a row, Western Maryland Scenic Railroad is hosting a Railfest event, which included in the itinerary is another Fireball Photo Experience. These photos, taken during last year's Railfest include WMSR locomotives 561 and 501, coupled together with a Western Maryland Railway circus caboose. Included also is one photo featuring visiting locomotive CSX CM44AC no. 7288.

In conjunction with Steamtown's 2026 Railfest, the Iron Horse Society with Steve Barry Photography is once again hosting a tri-night photo session dubbed "After Dark at the Park". These photos were taken during a segment of last year's "After Dark" session, featuring a 1942 Ford GPW Jeep, M3A1 Stuart "Lady Lois", and a PRR X26c boxcar headed by Lackawanna EMC SC pre production locomotive no. 426. Bringing this scene together were the handful of reenactors, posing with the locomotive and jeep.
This set of photos from last year's Railfest is just a small portion of the many photo opportunities that can be captured during these photo sessions.

Last October, I captured Norfolk & Western Class J No. 611 powering trains on the Buckingham Branch Railroad. A unfortunate amount of photos from this trip didn't turn out to my liking, with these being part of the vague exception. N&W 611 starts the day's excursions, blasting through the fog out of Goshen VA.

Only a month ago, Union Pacific's Big Boy no. 4014 traversed Norfolk Southern's Middle Division from Altoona, to Pittsburgh. In contrast to my previous posts regarding this excursion, NS territory this far west of Altoona was alien to me, having never shot the Middle Division west of Cassandra PA. Thus, what I found when I arrived at these final two locations, was exactly what I got.
Upon arriving at rural Torrance PA, along milepost 300, I had to squeeze in with the rest of the already present crowd of photographers and onlookers, and make special care not to get in anyone's way. Needless to say, I managed to find a spot, and an hour-plus later, the giant 4-8-8-4 stumbled through.
As soon as the train had passed, we drove out to our final spot during this chase, only to find it severely overcrowded. Since we had created some distance between us and the train, we decided to check out a couple other locations in Greensburg, finally finding the 1912 built Pennsylvania Railroad Greensburg Station suitable. After waiting for 20 minutes or so, 4014 came roaring triumphantly through town, ending our chase of mainline steam.

Sometimes, it's nice to just take a break and stare at the details. Nickel Plate Road no. 765 is a busy looking locomotive, with plenty of details from the smokebox to the cab, typical of those great Van Sweringen Berkshires. Photos taken in October of 2024 in Pleasant Lake, Indiana featuring Fort Wayne Railroad's NKP 765.

Everywhere we shot along the old D&RGW (or perhaps D&RG concerning the 168) line to Osier, had some feature, view, or shot different from any other that we had already captured that day. These photos, taken at an S curve near milepost 312 prominently showcase the brutal rocky landscape that the Rio Grande had to blast and build through, in the 19th century.

Perhaps the most Johnstown-esque scene we photographed all day during the C&BL 111 photo charter, was from the overpass on Valley Street. Here, the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad line zig-zags in between industrial buildings and Will's Creek, crisscrossing the old Baltimore and Ohio rail line to Keyser and beyond. Farther in the background, downtown Cumberland Maryland itself.
