Not one forced smile present in this gallery

I would need 100 hands to count the reasons I love doing this but one of them is that almost every capture in all of my shoots is candid.

Let me explain.

Your pet doesn’t know they are in the middle of a photoshoot. They have no idea they are “supposed” to smile at the camera. They are just happy to be there with you. Sure, we can place y’all and I can use some noises to get them to look but most of the time, it is just y’all loving on your pets and each other. I just get to capture the joy that you all bring each other. Which means your gallery will likely include some photos of your pets being silly or goofy.

Now, sure, I do give pose prompts but they normally bring out natural responses and then add in pets who don’t know what a pose is and are just doing what they please? We have perfection.

I’ll take my coffee with a sunrise, please

So quick question, are you a sunrise or a sunset person?

I love both personally, however, I am a morning person so I love a good sunrise. It also tends to be more private with less people (literally who doesn’t love that?) and the colors are always stunning.

With that said, I know a lot of people probably think golden hour and sunset is the typical time for a photoshoot but, if you want a sunrise, with less crowds, with your pet? You’ve found your early rising, morning loving, coffee sipping photographer who’s ready to meet you there for it.

***Ask me how many people I edited out of this photo….. the answer is 0. One of the biggest reasons I love a sunrise shoot, so perfect for privacy and your reactive or nervous pets.*

Soul dogs

We got to talk a lot about soul dogs during this session and I’m so grateful for every single story y’all are willing to share with me. I also get to share my soul dogs story with some of y’all too, and I’m grateful you listen, cause it helps to keep him alive.

Give me a moment to not talk about photography and I promise it’ll circle back around.

I met with a pet communicator yesterday; I know it sounds crazy but I feel like I have the right audience. My soul dog immediately was there; she said he had been waiting for this moment. I was supposed to be able to talk to my other 4 pets but he took up 45 minutes of our time, which I didn’t mind.

He spoke in pictures to her which she verbalized to me. She said she was amazed at how clearly he communicated and he felt like a sentient being in dog form.

One picture he showed her was him and I dancing and playing in the light. And she said he showed her so much light through windows and outside and in pictures. For those of you who don’t know, Ozzie is my sun dog. He always found the light and rested in it. I have a sun tattoo cause of it and it aligned so well cause the sun is life giving and he did just that for me.

She said he is acknowledging me in the sun with him and he is telling me to find the light and use the light. That he is with me through the light and sun beams. Then he showed her what looked like a photograph with sun light in it and I told her I get comments about my use of sun flares. She said he knows his influence on your photography work through that light I use.

Ozzie is the reason I started this. He’s the reason I get to meet you all and offer you something I hope you cherish forever. I love that I get to hear your stories all because of Ozzie and then capture them.

My last note on this, she also said pets sometimes show her actual pictures that have been taken of them and their person when she communicates with them. And that photographers, like me, play a vital role in that. If my work has never felt important to me before, in that moment it felt like the world.

I’ll hop of my soap box for now.

A little silly goes a long way

I get it, y’all feel like you don’t know what to do in front or the camera. And I really get it, I am the person who is literally just awkward in life; put me in front of a camera and you’re better off asking a scarecrow to pose. Throw my husband into the photos and I’ll be sure to be extra awkward cause what do you mean you want us to kiss in front of you? I barely hold hands with him in public.

This is why I ask the questions I do before our shoot. I want to get to know y’all a bit so I can be sure that I not only capture the essence of you and your pet together but also to make sure everyone is comfy and having fun! No one needs to worry about what to do in front of the camera, I got you on that. All you have to do is show up, don’t be anyone other than yourself, and shower your pet with love.

You ate also more than allowed to use your voice. You don’t want to do something? Tell me. You have an idea you want to try? Please don’t keep it to yourself!

This shoot showed all of that. They are fun, sweet, silly, adventurous, and down for anything. And then Copper adds in just the right amount of laughter and cuddles needed to make this shoot complete.

By your side, at your service

Had the honor of photographing service dogs in training with Helping Howls and their handlers.

I feel like service dogs get the stigma of they are always working dogs. However, I got an inside look, and outside of the service they provide that truly opens up opportunity and possibility in the world for their handlers, they are first and foremost loved and cherished family members.

They each have such unique personalities that help to create the connection and bond that emanates the love seen but also is the key behind their success as a team, as evident in these photos.
