Motherhood sessions don’t always go the way we imagine—and that’s exactly what makes them beautiful.

We had planned a sweet little paint session with her daughter, but this toddler had other plans. 😂 She called the shots, skipped the paint, and decided the playground was where she wanted to be.

So we followed her.

And honestly? Those ended up being my favorite photos.

The movement. Mom following her lead. The little moments of connection that couldn’t have been planned or posed.

Because this is what storytelling is.

It’s not about creating the perfect picture. It’s about noticing the story as it happens and preserving the feeling of it—the way motherhood really looks in this season.

The paint can wait. Childhood can’t. 🤍

Story Over Perfection | Session Two 🤍
The second session of my Story Over Perfection workshop cohosted with wonderful Miriam Dudley Photography was one I will hold close to my heart.

It was such an honor to work alongside so many incredibly talented photographers and help them explore the beauty of storytelling, connection, and capturing the moments that make motherhood so meaningful.

This session felt especially emotional and intimate. Photographing E ✿ with her beautiful newborn baby was such a reminder of why I love what I do. The quiet moments, the tiny details, the overwhelming love, and the fleeting beauty of those early days of motherhood.

Thank you to every photographer who showed up with an open heart and a willingness to learn, create, and see motherhood through a different lens. Watching you embrace storytelling and find your own artistic voice was truly so special.

Here’s to creating images that aren’t just beautiful, but that feel like something.

Hi, I’m Amy! 🤎 The face behind Amy Mitchell Photography, and I thought it was time to reintroduce myself.

Motherhood is quite literally what I live and breathe for. Not just because I’m a mama to two little girls myself, but because there is something so incredibly beautiful about the love, connection, and emotion that comes with this season of life.

My heart is in capturing the feeling behind a photograph. The way your little one reaches for you, the quiet moments of connection, the chaos, the tenderness, and all the little things that make your story uniquely yours.

I specialize in motherhood, maternity, newborn, and family photography in Charlottesville, Virginia, offering in-home sessions, outdoor sessions, and intimate sessions in my own cozy in-home studio.

My approach is emotive, artful, and rooted in storytelling. I want your images to feel like art, but I also want them to feel like a memory. Something that brings you right back to how this season felt, long after your babies aren’t so little anymore.

Because to me, photography has never been just about taking a beautiful picture. It’s about preserving the feeling of being right there, in the middle of a season you wish you could hold onto forever.

Still feeling so grateful for this day. 🤍

My very first workshop, Story Over Perfection, was something I had dreamed about for a long time — and getting to bring it to life alongside the incredibly talented Miriam Dudley Photography (Miriam Dudley I Northern Virginia Photographer) made it even more special.

We gathered a group of photographers at my in-home studio and spent the day talking about what it really means to tell a story through photography. Not just creating a beautiful image, but slowing down, noticing the little moments, and allowing connection and emotion to lead the way.

We had two beautiful motherhood sessions that were intimate, authentic, and completely genuine. We talked about finding and using beautiful light, photographing families in their homes, and creating images that feel honest and meaningful rather than perfectly posed.

But more than anything, this day was about remembering that the story matters more than perfection.

I’m so thankful to every photographer who showed up, learned with us, shared their perspective, and trusted us with their time. Watching everyone photograph, create, and connect was such a special experience.

And a huge thank you to Miriam for creating this with me. 🤍

My first workshop is officially in the books — and I couldn’t have asked for a better one.

One year.

One whole year of watching her grow, discovering her little personality, and somehow wondering how twelve months could have passed so quickly. 🤍

This wasn’t just a cake smash.

It was a celebration of her — and of the family she was born into.

I had the sweetest honor of welcoming this beautiful family back into my in-home studio for their daughter’s first birthday. A repeat family who has trusted me to document their memories before, and now I get to watch their family grow right in front of my camera. 🥹

There were cake-covered fingers and little giggles, of course. 🎂 But there were also the sweetness of siblinghood, three little personalities together, and all those in-between moments that make up this fleeting season of motherhood.

Because someday the cake will be gone.
The tiny clothes will be packed away.
The baby cheeks will change.
And these little ones will be bigger.

But photographs let us hold onto the feeling.

The joy of having all three children together.
The beautiful, messy, ordinary magic of being a family of five.

That’s what I want my milestone sessions to be.

Not just photographs of a one-year-old, but photographs of your family right now.

The love.
The connection.
The chaos.
The little details you don’t want to forget.

Because the cake is only part of the story.
