Every summer, the fuchsia in my Anacortes backyard puts on a show, and this bloom was too good to pass up. I shot it with my Sony a7IV and the FE 70-200mm f4 Macro G OSS II lens, using in camera focus stacking so every ruffled layer stays sharp, from the deep red sepals down to the long, trailing stamens. The afternoon sun was doing all the work that day, catching the petals in warm, soft light and turning the purple and red into something almost jewel toned.
This is the kind of shot that reminds me why macro work is my favorite part of the craft. You get close enough to see the details most people walk right past. Fuchsia like this grows all over the Pacific Northwest, but there is something special about photographing one from my own yard here in Skagit County.
