I've been on the hunt for one of these for a long time: it's a Green Heron. Amazingly colorful bird about the size of a sea gull. I found this fine fellow on Union Bay in Lake Washington, very near Husky Stadium.

This time-lapse video, which I shot from my backyard in Anacortes, shows the smoke billowing from one of the many wildfires in British Columbia. Based on the angle and distance, I believe this smoke plume is from the Ainslie Creek fire in the Fraser River Canyon near Boston Bar, BC, about 110 miles northeast of Anacortes.

This video was shot at 1 frame per second with a telephoto lens so there's quite a bit of atmospheric distortion from the summer heat waves rising between the camera and the subject. When I first noticed the smoke I thought perhaps there was a volcanic eruption happening.

The Salish Sea was amazingly calm today so I went out to Smith Island again to see the Tufted Puffins. This time they came much closer to the boat and, as a result, I got some incredibly sharp images.

I recently visited Skookumchuck Narrows, a world-renowned natural phenomenon on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia where 200 billion gallons of tidal saltwater squeeze through a narrow channel. It creates one of the fastest tidal rapids in the world, generating massive standing waves, turbulent whitewater, and giant whirlpools that attract thrill-seeking kayakers.

It's a 2.5 mile hike through a beautiful rainforest to get to the narrows. There were some kayakers there when we arrived but they never did paddle out into the current. I imagine they were waiting for the tide to slow down a bit.

Cedar Waxwing, Pearrygin Lake State Park, Winthrop, WA 5/27/26.

Cedar Waxwings are named for the distinctive, bright red waxy droplets on the tips of their secondary flight feathers. These tips are not actually made of wax, but are extensions of the feather shaft colored by a red carotenoid pigment called astaxanthin, derived from their diet of berries.
