Discipline - Haldon Forest, Devon taken on Wednesday 14th October 2026.

I quickly dismissed Plan A and following the conditions I ended up at a location I had photographed many times before.

I didn't want to come away with similar looking pictures, so I decided to go to the opposite side of the trees, where I had never had any success before.

Plan B was simple, I would stay in here and try to make it work. I spent three hours in a fifty square foot area finding different angles and images.

The conditions were beautiful. No wind, fog ranging from thin to thick and sunlight occasionally breaking through the fog. I was pleased with my morning's work and learnt never to dismiss what appears difficult.

Shinrin-Yoku - Early morning Haldon Forest, Devon taken on Tuesday 6th October 2026.

This was the third consecutive morning I had set an early alarm and made the drive to Haldon. I had driven all the way in fog, only for it to disappear as I entered the forest. However, this morning was different.

I had a shortlist of possible locations and this one was at the top. The fog did it's usual dance of thinning out and then getting thicker again.

I spent about an hour enjoying the conditions and adjusting the composition. Third time lucky.

Scouting Picture - Haldon Forest, Devon

I have been returning to this composition every so often, but it has never quite worked. I think there maybe too large an open space between the foreground and background trees.

I will try and refine it over the coming months, but if you never see it again then you know it didn't go well.

Another forecast of mist and fog for tomorrow morning. Let's hope it’s correct as I have seen very little so far this Autumn.

Have a good weekend 😁

There was such a nice atmosphere at Upton Park, Torquay this morning on the dog walk, we had to pull out the phone for a quick picture.

Sound - Haldon Forest, Devon taken on Saturday 29th August 2026.

The overwhelming sound was rain drops striking my umbrella and the surrounding Forest. It was still early morning and the dawn chorus could still be heard.

With a little help from modern technology I noted a long tailed tit, marsh tit, nuthatch, goldcrest, chaffinch, redpoll and red crossbill. All whilst stood in the same location for nearly an hour.

Then there were the other sounds. Busy squirrels dropping nuts and seeds from the trees and the one sound that always gets my heart going. Usually from behind there is a russel of undergrowth and may the snapping of twigs and never any visible culprit.

Unexpected return - Early morning Haldon Forest, Devon taken on Tuesday 8th September 2026.

I arrived in the forest just before sunrise, about 6.30am. It was almost dark as I gathered my wet weather gear as heavy rain fell. I used the lack of any mist and fog as an opportunity to revisit a set of trees I had first looked at some two years ago.

At about 8.15am I decided to call it a day and made the twenty minute walk back to the car. With my head under the umbrella and watching where I was walking, I didn't notice a subtle change. As I approached the car some light fog was drifting into the area where I was parked.

I quickly set up the camera again and did my best to find a passable composition. I managed to get five pictures before the fog began to thin. A passing gift from Mother Nature.

Downpour - Haldon Forest, Devon taken on Saturday 29th August 2026.

As a large band of rain swept over Devon for the first time in a long time, I headed towards Haldon in the dark.

After nearly two hours of trying to make things work, they weren't. I could see from my rain app it would soon be coming to an end. I headed for this location and set up the camera in hope.

Under my umbrella things were obvious...I needed some atmosphere to lift the scene. The rain began to intensify and it brought just a little light fog. After five minutes things had changed completely.

I had to remove the umbrella from the tripod due to what had become a downpour shaking the camera. Now I needed three hands to hold the umbrella, dry the lens and take the shot. I managed it with two.

Dark - first light Haldon Forest, Devon taken on Saturday 22nd August 2026.

I made it to this location just as the dawn chorus was at it's peak. It was still very dark under the canopy of the large beech trees.

Beyond this line of beeches there is a more open pine section of the forest. What little light there was lit the scene beautifully, including the fallen leaves.

Lucky it was completely calm, so I didn't need to worry about swaying branches with my ten second exposure.

The weather has now broken and I was up in the forest again yesterday making the most of the misty conditions. Yesterday's pictures to follow shortly.

Scouting Picture - Haldon Forest 2025

I took this scouting picture last September just as the first signs of Autumn were approaching. I did return in October, but the scene was very bare and I was too late.

I intend to concentrate solely on this area of the forest this Autumn, which is also close to the pines I scouted recently.

The added bonus is there are also some giant beech trees. Bring on the colour and the conditions 🤞
