One thing I hear quite often is, “I’d love maternity photographs, but I don’t feel confident enough.”

The confidence usually comes after you’ve seen the photographs, not before.

You aren’t expected to walk into the studio knowing how to pose or feeling amazing from every angle. I’ll guide you through your position, your hands, where to look and all the tiny adjustments that make such a difference on camera.

So please don’t make confidence a requirement for booking. Bring the bump. I’ll help with the rest.

Back to work as normal today after the summer holidays! Thinking of all my tiny clients (and their parents!) who are starting school today, have the most amazing time!

This week is super busy with 6 sessions over the next 5 days. Started with a wonderful little smasher this afternoon for his first birthday!

I've now got very limited availability for the rest of September.

Cake smash sessions are never just about photographing a baby sitting politely behind a cake. The funny expressions, the icing covered faces, the crawling off, the enthusiastic destruction and all the bits you couldn’t possibly plan are usually what make the gallery.

If your little one has a first birthday coming up, it’s worth booking ahead so there’s plenty of time to talk about styling and get everything organised. Then they can concentrate on the important job of making an almighty mess.

This is exactly why lighting matters so much in photography.

The same bump can be photographed in a dozen completely different ways, and changing the light can take an image from soft and bright to something much more dramatic like this.

I love having that variety in a maternity gallery because pregnancy isn’t one dimensional either. You can create the softer photographs, the simple ones and the stronger statement portraits all during the same session.

You don’t need to arrive knowing which poses or styles will work for you. We figure that out together as we go.

How fast this time goes! And you never really 'get' quite how fast until you are living it.

One of the reasons I love black and white photography is that it strips everything back. There’s no colour demanding your attention, so you notice expression, shape, light and all the smaller details instead.

Maternity portraits don’t always need elaborate styling to make an impact. Sometimes a shirt, beautiful light and a very simple pose can create something you’ll still want hanging on your wall long after the baby who was inside that bump has started school.

If you’re expecting and keep thinking you’re “not really someone who likes having photographs taken”, you might be surprised by just how different a properly guided studio session feels.
