I’m ashamed to admit this. My first shoot with my girls, from 7 years ago is corrupt.
I started a backup, got distracted, and assumed future Martha had finished the job.
So if your photos only exist on a memory stick, they’re not really backed up.
I back up my clients’ photos in multiple places and am forever reminding them to do the same.
Yet somehow, when it came to photos of me and my horses, I wasn’t following my own advice.
Thankfully, this isn’t quite the horror story it could have been.
I have physical prints from the shoot in question, most of the images are safe, and the ones I do still have are now backed up to the heavens.
But it was a very good reminder that intending to back something up and actually checking you’ve done it are two very different things.
It’s no secret digital files have a restricted lifespan, but if you back them up in multiple places you have a much higher chance of keeping them safe.
SO...
Where should you save your photos?
☁️ Google Drive, iCloud or Dropbox
📱 Your phone or tablet
💻 Your computer
💾 An external hard drive (I use a LaCie Rugged)
My advice? Download your photos straight after your viewing and save them in at least three places.
I know not everyone is tech-savvy, but if you ever need help, advice, or a nudge in the right direction, just ask.
The memories are worth far more than the five minutes it takes to back them up ❤️
