I was invited back to Ayrshire College. This time to photograph the launch of their new wind power course. A lot of money is being invested in the future of providing clean energy. It’s an exciting time for future students. Also great to meet Frank Emil Moen the CEO/Managing Partner of Energy Innovation - NORWAY we had a quick chat about the local area, straight up nice fella.

Today is all about celebrating the dogs that bring so much joy, character and chaos into our lives.

I also want to take a minute to say a massive thank you to everyone who supports me and what I do. To everyone who trusts me with their dogs, recommends me, shares my work, follows along and continues to back me, I genuinely appreciate it.

Your support is what keeps me doing what I love every day. I get to spend my time around dogs, do a job I’m passionate about and keep building something that means a lot to me.

So, thank you. To the dogs, the owners and everyone behind the scenes who continues to support me, it wouldn’t be the same without you.

Here’s to the dogs. The muddy paws, wet noses, wagging tails and everything that comes with them. 🐶🤎

A photograph can freeze a moment, but the eyes are what make it live.

With dogs, expression is everything. It’s in the look before the run, the calm after a long day, the curiosity in a new place, and the quiet trust built over years together. A good photograph doesn’t just capture what a dog looks like, it captures what’s behind the eyes.

Because sometimes, one look tells the whole story.

On location photography can mean far more than finding a beautiful scene. At its best, it can tell a story about the place, the people and the connection between the two.

Take this image of Sapphire, Sapphires owner Darren takes time out of his day to maintain the viaduct and its surroundings, all off his own back, giving something back to a place that means a great deal to him.

What was once overgrown has been transformed into a walking path, complete with a fishing hut. It is a simple example of someone putting the time in to make a place better for others.

Darren has known this spot for years. Sapphire was once a puppy spending time around these same surroundings, so photographing Sapphire beneath the viaduct carries a much deeper connection than simply making a good photograph.

That is what I love about on location photography. The setting is not just a backdrop. Sometimes, it is part of the story.

Autumn is just around the corner.

Cooler days. Crisp mornings. Golden leaves underfoot.

It’s one of the finest times of year to get your dog out into the open and capture a few moments worth keeping.

The changing colours make a natural backdrop, from deep greens to warm golds and burnt oranges. And with the cooler weather, your dog can spend more time exploring without the heat of summer.

There’s something about a dog in the autumn woods that never gets old.

I absolutely love on-location shoots. Somewhere familiar or somewhere completely new, it never feels the same twice. The seasons change, the light shifts and even the messiest backgrounds can become something painterly if you take the time to really look. I love that challenge of making something from what might, at first glance, look like nothing.

But what I love most is letting the dog choose. Every dog is naturally drawn to different little spots, and rather than forcing them into the “perfect” background, I’d much rather work with where they feel comfortable. When they’re relaxed and confident, you see more of who they really are, and that always makes for a more honest and emotional image.

Made to last.

This image is from my Heirloom Series, where a photograph of your dog becomes something a little more enduring. Each portrait is placed into a fictional landscape, built by hand with layered textures, considered details and a good deal of time in Photoshop.

The result is a one-of-one piece, made to feel less like a photograph and more like something that belongs on the wall for years to come.

No two dogs are the same. Their portraits shouldn’t be either.

Today’s photoshoot took me back to Ayrshire College, this time photographing the Festival of Practice: Ctrl + Alt + Develop.

The day brought staff together to take part in seminars reflecting on the past educational year, while also looking ahead to the year to come. There were workshops, plenty of opportunities to learn and share ideas, some much-needed food and refreshments, and finally the Ayrshire Way Awards ceremony, celebrating the people and achievements across the college.

But Martyn, you’re a pet photographer, not an event photographer…

Well, funny you should say that! 😄

I’ve been working with Ayrshire College for nearly four years now, and for me, photography has never just been about turning up, taking some nice photos and heading home. It’s about building relationships, understanding people and learning what they need from each brief.

Over those four years, I’ve had the chance to work closely with the team, get to know the staff and understand the different requirements that come with photographing everything from events and awards to the people and stories that make the college what it is. That trust isn’t something you build overnight. It comes from years of working together, learning from each job, figuring out what works, making mistakes, adapting and getting to know the people behind the brief.

Sometimes you’ve got to take on jobs outside your usual niche. After all, the bills aren’t going to pay themselves! But there’s also something brilliant about stepping outside your comfort zone, working with different people and, most importantly, catching up with familiar faces along the way.

Four years in, I’m still grateful for the relationships that photography has helped me build. And to top it off it was great to see my image in the Ayrshire magazine!

One of the great things about working with animals is that I don’t need a whole team around me. I don’t need stylists or make-up artists. Animals arrive exactly as they are, and somehow, they are already perfect.

Occasionally, one might have been groomed the day before, but for the most part, there is no styling, no carefully constructed look and no attempt to hide behind appearances. Animals are simply true to themselves.

Once they are in front of the camera, my job becomes much simpler. I don’t need to create a persona or manufacture a moment. I just need to pay attention, build trust and capture the expression they are trying to communicate.

That is one of the things I love most about photographing animals. They remind us that the most powerful images often come from authenticity. No pretence, no performance, just a genuine character looking back at you through the lens.

And when you capture that expression at exactly the right moment, that is when the magic happens.

The best thing about having repeat clients is that they become so much more than just your next booking.

Through photography, I met Maggie's Muddy Mutts and her wonderfully crazy pack of dogs. We hit it off straight away and, after many photoshoots, I became the photographer for her flyball team Muddy Mutts Flyball. Somewhere along the way, Maggie became one of my closest friends. No matter how long we go without seeing each other, we always pick up where we left off with plenty of smiles and laughter.

One of the greatest privileges of working with clients over the years is getting to know them beyond the photos. You learn what they love, what makes them smile and the little details that make them who they are.

That is exactly what happened with this image. What could have been just another portrait became something much more personal. By incorporating Maggie’s beloved Jalapeño with her love of The Legend of Zelda, we created an image that tells her story.

That is what I love most about building long-term relationships with my clients. It is no longer just about taking photographs. It is about creating meaningful images that reflect the people, and the pets, they love most.
