Since picking up my first DSLR in 2015, my work has been inspired by the rugged beauty of the Canadian Rockies and the ever-changing coastline of Vancouver Island.

I've wanted to visit this waterfall in Wells Gray Provincial Park for a long time. It’s gotten so much hype on social media that the trail and parking lot are now incredibly busy. Instead, I've spent more time exploring the park's lesser-known areas.

When we visited Wells Gray in September, I planned to visit the falls without focusing on photography. Just enjoy the place and take it all in. Of course, I brought my camera anyway.

Moselle and I got up well before sunrise and, to my excitement, we were the first ones in the parking lot. I was hoping we'd have the place to ourselves, and we lucked out.

A thick layer of fog shrouded everything, creating this really moody atmosphere. When we reached the falls, we had the entire place to ourselves. No crowds, no waiting around, and no trying to work around people in my compositions.

I ended up shooting quite a few different compositions, including some with Moselle in the frame to give a sense of scale. We loved exploring behind the falls and the grotto cave on the other side. What a magical place!

So much for not taking any photos…

This is a snapshot of my incredible partner, Moselle, and me silhouetted on a sunrise hike in the Badlands.

One of my favourite things about our relationship is that we still get giddy while exploring somewhere new. We don't always have a plan and that's half the fun.

We head off down a trail, wonder what's around the next corner, and see where the day takes us. It's so rewarding to discover places together and share experiences that neither of us will ever forget.

Moselle and I have built a lifestyle that I know a lot of people dream about, or at least think they do. Spending 3 months a year living out of a camp trailer, moving from place to place isn't for everyone, but we love it.

Life on the road isn't always perfect, and neither are we, but I wouldn't trade this life we've built for anything.

This Halloween marks almost 20 years together!

I'm excited about what's ahead. The next 12 months are going to be a pretty special milestone in our relationship, and I can't wait!

I look forward to continuing to push our boundaries, chasing new adventures, getting lost down unfamiliar trails, laughing like idiots, and never losing that excitement for discovering the world together.

This is one of those surreal scenes that is really hard to explain. One of those times where you look at the photo afterwards and think, “yeah… this really doesn’t do it justice.”

Before I visited the Badlands, I thought I’d mainly shoot black and white. Drawn to all the textures, shapes, and weird little details in the landscape, I thought monochrome would suit it perfectly.

I was fortunate to camp very close to these formations! It was one of the most interesting places in the park!

I was able to hang around camp, make food, relax and watch the light. Then when the light really started to pop off, I’d grab my camera and walk over to my favourite formations.

It felt pretty damn luxurious, photography-wise. The campfire views were pretty good too.

During The Spirit of the West workshop our group was told that our next subject was waiting for us up the road, where the field opens up. I was intrigued.

And there she was… Sally, against the fence with a genuine cowgirl smile.

The landscape, her energy and laugh, made me feel like I had stepped straight into the Old West!

Do you remember that 90s cartoon movie ‘The Land Before Time’?

We were lucky to be camping just a few minutes from this canyon. We stayed here for a whole week and ended up exploring it most evenings around sunset.

The golden hour sunset light here was magical. When it started hitting the tops of these mounds, the whole place came alive.

It felt like I had stepped right into ‘The Land Before Time.’

I could have spent hours wandering around this canyon. Every time we went back, I found something different.

I had the amazing opportunity to photograph Sarah!

Her striking blue eyes can easily bring any scene to life.

Searching through the tall grass, there was a fallen rotten tree that my friend Bert and I almost fell into multiple times… never to be seen again, while Sarah’s friend foraged Saskatoon berries for us to munch on.

Bert and I survived, and I managed to get this shot while chewing on a berry.

While out exploring the Alberta Badlands one evening at sunset, Moselle pointed out an interesting composition that I had completely overlooked.

As we headed back to the truck, the sunset light suddenly broke through the clouds, lighting up the unique Badlands landscape with this beautiful, strong pink alpenglow.

Moselle hurried me over to this spot before the light disappeared. The hills and textures were glowing, and in the foreground you can see a dry creek bed (or maybe even a waterfall) that I imagine would only come to life after a heavy rainfall.

Thanks, Moselle, for spotting this one and making sure I didn't miss it.

While attending the Spirit of the West workshop, I saw a scene during lunch that caught my eye… and disappeared before I could grab my camera.

I slung my camera over my shoulder for the rest of lunch, watching and waiting to see if the scene would reoccur.

And it did.

One of the owners, Russell, built an incredible, massive barn with a saloon. While eating lunch inside the barn, I looked through the doorway into the saloon and there was Russell, standing in the saloon doors with the bright midday light silhouetting him.

A vision instantly came to mind.

I quickly dialled in my camera settings to intentionally overexpose the light surrounding Russell, using the bright backlight and saloon doors to create the starting point for the image I had in my head.

But the final vision was only possible in Photoshop.

I crushed the blacks and shadows around Russell, slowly pushing everything into an almost complete abyss. Then I used several different tools and layers to create the extreme rays of light surrounding him.

Every part of my edit was intentional, created to match the feeling I envisioned when I first saw him standing there.

I’m a huge fan of science fiction, and one of my inspirations for this image was the final scene of Interstellar.

Rather than simply creating another western portrait, I wanted to imagine something different...

A cowboy stepping through his saloon doors and into another dimension.

While visiting Drumheller, early one morning, Moselle and I decided to explore Horse Thief Canyon.

We woke to the thickest fog I’ve ever seen! It was so dense that we had to drastically slow down on the highway while we made our way to the canyon.

The fog was still thick as the sun began to rise when we arrived and parked at the top.

As we made our way down into the canyon, we got turned around a few times trying to follow different little trails. Those wrong turns ended up being one of the best parts of the experience.

Every time we got lost, we found ourselves wandering into another beautiful part of the canyon that we probably wouldn’t have otherwise seen.

One of my favourite shots from the Spirit of the West portrait workshop!

This is Jim, strumming his guitar. The thick morning fog was slowly lifting as sun began to rise.

I noticed that the road in the distance created a leading line. Drawing the eye through the landscape and towards Jim.

Everything came together… the person, guitar, landscape and fog.
