1️⃣ Using single-point AF
Birds move way too fast for single point.
Use a wider AF area (wide-area, dynamic, 3D tracking etc.) so your camera can lock on and stay on your subject.
2️⃣ Not pre-focusing
Don’t wait for the bird to enter the frame, focus where it’s going to fly through.
By the time it appears, your lens is already near the right focus distance, so it snaps on instantly.
3️⃣ Jerky panning
Smooth = sharp.
Keep your body loose, rotate from your core, and follow the bird before and after the shot for clean motion and continuous AF tracking.

Northern Gannets are amazing!

I was supposed to fiddle with it for a while, but I got it on the first try and even surprised myself 😂
What’s actually harder, putting on a lens hood or putting on a lens cap on the first try?

Here’s why these 3 settings matter:
1️⃣ Continuous AF (AF-C / AI Servo)
Single AF is for still subjects. Continuous AF constantly adjusts focus as the bird moves closer or farther away — which is essential for sharp flight shots.
2️⃣ Wide Area AF / Subject Tracking
Birds move fast and unpredictably. Using a wider AF area or subject tracking gives your camera more information to work with and helps it stay locked on the bird instead of the background
3️⃣ Back Button Focus
Separating focus from the shutter lets you track the bird without refocusing every time you take a photo. It gives you more control and way fewer missed shots.
