These are just a handful of the many who pull together a great rodeo like VWS.

Tonight I relinquished my title to bullfighter Ethan Barrows after a bumping, grinding, rubbing kart race in Langley in the 2026 instalment of the VWS Cowboy Challenge Cup.

This year’s race featured some returning regulars such as pickup men Jason Resch and Darcy McKinney and CPRA judge Ward Henry. But we also welcomed several new competitors including CPRA judge Corey Prutton, bullfighter Josh Haeberle and Ethan Barrows (who definitely cheated taking me out in a corner 🤣) and trick rider Jayna Hale and her Mom RoxAnne and dad Brad, and bull riders Kahl Wasilow and Glen Erickson.

Started years ago by Larry Adams and Ward Henry, it’s become a fun tradition at the last CPRA rodeo of a long season.

The reason I love “small town” rodeos is that the fans get to see the same cowboys, cowgirls and roughstock that they see at the Calgary Stampede, Canadian Finals Rodeo and other large rodeos. But at rodeos like Valley West Stampede fans get to be up close and on top of the action. Today they watched Lucas Macza score 82.5 points in Kesler’s bronc named Sharing Secrets.

Tomorrow VWS fans will enjoy more rodeo action in this important CPRA rodeo as contestants who are “on the bubble” battle for the last points in the season to secure a spot in the Canadian Finals Rodeo.

Tickets are available online or at the gate if you’re in the area.

Howdy competitors, committee, volunteers and fans of the 2026 Calgary First Responders Rodeo.

What a great day of 6 hours of non-stop action from the smallest to the tallest.

Shots are online for you but this year we are taking a slightly different approach. Previously photos have been donated but this year we are doing it differently. We are charging $10 per photo with proceeds being donated back to CFFR.

We had three different professional rodeo photographers contributing their time to capture this year’s event. A typical rodeo photographer requires 2-3 hours of post edit per hour of action. So in this case that's 12 - 18 hours to go thru the shots, crop, etc. So this helps value their time while still supporting the charity.

Because we had three photographers operating independently, it's possible that
some photos may be slightly out of order. So dig thru and see what you find.

Hopefully we caught everyone. If we missed you or your ride or run we apologize and we’ll do our best to get you next year!

Congrats to everyone who competed and hats off to an amazing committee!

If you haven't already, be sure to follow your photographers online:

Waking up to the terrible news that Cooper Filpek fractured his spine in Logan, Utah on Friday night (August 6).

I last visited with Cooper at the Cloverdale Rodeo, where the 2025 National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Ba****ck Champion made a huge impression. We had some great chats and he had some great rides.

The 23 year old ba****ck rider from Rapid City, South Dakota, makes a bold statement in his bright yellow custom hat, vest and chaps. He told me his grandma hand makes his vintage rodeo shirts. The kid has swagger and yet he is most polite and humble. A rare combination.

I’m confident he will find his way back to rodeo as he recovers from emergency surgery last night. It will be a long road surely and we are all praying for you buddy to have a full recovery. Hope to see you down the trail again soon.

Congratulations to Dexter Nelson on his induction into the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association Hall of Fame. Dexter founded the Canadian Pro Rodeo Sports Medicine Team which has grown exponentially in size as well as in the importance to the athletes of rodeo.

Before jumping into photography I was proud to serve with Dex on the Sports Med team for over a decade assisting with communications and community relations. Dex was always kind with a big smile.

Very proud of him and his achievements.

People sometimes ask “what do I do when I’m not shooting rodeos or other sports?” Well I do many things, but none more special than when I have the opportunity to swear in new Canadians as I did in two different ceremonies this morning.

From a black robe to blue jeans and everything in between, I love creating or capturing special moments while building a better community. Today our community of Canada grew by 160 proud citizens.
