There are many parts of the UNBROKEN event incredibly powerful and I'm hoping to share those over the next few days.
One of those things was, of course, the art.
approached Jane Stewart with an idea: to tell Jane’s story through art. And what came from that was so much more than a collection of beautiful pieces hanging in the room on the top level of .
The artwork really became a centerpiece of the evening.
The art is striking on it's own. But Marion had written the story behind each piece to accompany it. What she was trying to express, why she chose certain colours, the meaning behind the little details, and the thoughts and emotions woven into the work.
And people were INTERESTED. They weren't just walking by and looking at the paintings and moving on. They were stopping. They were reading. Looking again. Taking photos of the stories so they could remember them.
I could see people connecting with the work differently once they knew what was behind it. I could see them thinking. I could see many of them relating. And I loved watching that happen.
Because that's what art can do.
It can make us pause. It can make us connect. It can help us feel something we might not have words for ourselves.
I think Marion didn't just create art to accompany Jane's story -- and truly, the story of many people who were gathered there at the event. She created a way for the people in the room to SEE and FEEL. And together they created a way for people there to feel they, too, can become unbroken.
Being there with my camera, watching people experience the work, was pretty damn special.
This was one of the many layers of an already extraordinary evening.
